Part of this has to do with the loss of leverage you get by extending the stem. By doing this you are moving the distance of the fulcrum (pivot point of the shifter) away from the load (transfer case), which results in more force required to change gears.
The reason many of us use a weighted shift knob is to counter this loss in leverage. The momentum gained by adding weight reduces the force required to shift.
And you thought physics was just for figuring out if a bowling ball or golf ball would hit first if dropped from the same height
