Im intrigued now. Spontaneous pneumothorax is not unheard of but usually befalls young skinny tall males. It can also occour due to blunt force ie chest hitting a steering wheel or even wresteling. Did you have any trauma, even seemingly insignificant? And what is your age and build. I had a paitent that got a spontaneous pneumo from wresteling and it was quite interesting watching the chest tube being placed. Were you concious for that? I have heard it is very painful. My boss has been shot in the chest before and he said that the chest tube hurt more than being shot did.
Open pneumothorax is the second most common cause of "preventable battlefield death". Now treating open chest injuries with a procedure called needle chest decompression is taught to all soldiers in a high speed first aid class. That involves taking a very large needle and sticking it in someones chest. Scary that the Army has decided to teach this to all soldiers, but if it saves someones life I guess its okay.
Glad to hear you are okay.

Hi, This is Danny's friend Bekka and I'm an EMT, so I understand the physiology behind a pneumothorax and everything like that. He had been having chest pain on his right side for quite a while, just on and off. But when he called me on Friday, he told me he had shortness of breath and a very extreme case of chest pain. When he told me that, I immediately told him that he needed to go to the ER because I knew something was seriously wrong. but anyway, he was sedated for the procedure of putting the chest tube in and he came back quite well. He's in pain right now and quite lethargic, but he's doing quite well in my opinion. He's a tall lanky male and he's 21 years old, 22 years next week. I know of the other two ways how one could get a pneumothorax, but honestly, I don't think anyone knows how a spontaneous one would really happen for someone that's tall and lanky. They say that smoking and drinking is a contributing factor and everything, but Danny doesn't do any of those two things. I talked to my mom about it last night and we both agreed that it might have been the drugs that Danny has been taking for his feet that he has to take care of every day. Poor guy has to be in pain and it's not fun to watch a friend suffer. But I'm totally here for him and I'm destined to save his life someday. lol.

But ya, as for his lung collapsing, the Xray looked really cool before he got the chest tube put in. His lung was about 50 percent collapsed and it was a good thing he went in when he did because otherwise he wouldnt be with us today. Anyway were going to the doctor now. OOOH! I can't wait to see what it looks like, coolbeans. Anyway, nice messaging you.

-Bekka
