I've told this story before, but my Dad and a friend were Elk hunting in Montana back in the day and a Grizzly charged them. They backed off the kill several hundred yards and the bear continued to charge them. They finally ended up having to shoot it. I think they put like 6 shots of 30-06 in the chest and head of the bear before dropping it.....at their feet.

It takes a lot to take one down....even with a large caliber rifle and even with good shot placement. That bear's heart and lungs were riddled with bullets. The only thing that stopped it was the head shot at very close distance.

Bear mace is your best bet. A gun is definitely a last resort.
