Just leave the tranny in 'D' and the transfer case in 2H and you are good to go for your city stuff. The transfer case can't be in 'N' (neutral) or you wouldn't be going anywhere...
You do want to put it into 4H every now and then, as this will make sure everything is lubricated. Just don't do it on the pavement...
Not sure about your noise. Can't say I've heard it...
Welcome to the board!

Ditto. Do the above and you will be good to go.
And, yes, there is a noise. I hear it too. There is also a noise when you step on the brake each time...kind of a little whoosh noise. Everything is electric in the FJ so there are some different noises to be heard.
As far as the 4wd shifting, get on a dirt road and drive along at a very slow speed and then just pull the 4wd lever straight back...it will engage 4H - 4wd. You can shift back out of 4H while moving as well. If you want 4L (low range) then you have to stop and put the tranny in 'N' and then you can shift into 4L. You must stop to shift back out of 4L too.
Have fun and go out and get that thing dirty!
