Only really needed if you are crossing rivers and streams that might be more than 2 feet deep.
Gasoline engines cope better than diesels when a bit of water gets sucked in, so a $400 snorkel on a diesel can save you thousands on engine rebuilds! Most Australian 4wds/suvs are diesel, hence the popularity of snorkels.
