I dont know about the smoking issue, ive seen new jettas with a big black ring around their bumper where the exhaust pipe comes out. Sure I know about the BMW 320d and its win at Nurburgring (sp?) and the outstanding strides in engine management that have been associated with diesels lately. But my dad drives a 92 BMW 535i on the interstate a lot and has 327k on it and the mechanic said it will last easily to 500k. Is it just better engineering that is going into diesels or what?
