Kokopelli Trail in one day?

So I'm in Ouray and I need to get to Moab... and I've got a day to do it. Seems like a good excuse to run Kokopelli baja style.

I understand that isn't the best way to do it and I won't see a lot of stuff, but it sounds a hell of a lot more fun than hitting the highway.

Can any one who has done it comment on this plan? Anybody have a GPS file or a link to good info for 4x4 folks?

Re: Kokopelli Trail in one day?

Its doable if you skip top of the world and know where you are going. Rose Garden Hill will slow you down and is a questionable portion of the trail to do solo, you can easily gets stuck or break on that part of the trail. The majority of the trail is basically a fire road, the area near fear and loathing towers (area looks a little like Moab with some slick rock) is really easy to get lost in, even with GPS we got a little lost and went in circles for about an hour when we did it last year not a bad area to get lost in though. Knowing where you are going is going to be the biggest issue. Find Luke (radrod57) he just did the Koko and might have a GPS file you can use.

Oh if you do this once you get down the rose garden hill I would recommend heading out to the hwy through the fisher valley I'm going to try and attach my Google earth tract for you to look at. Its to big to attach, PM me your Email and I will send it to you.

Most stuff on the www that you will find in a search is for Mountain bikes so be careful what you use as a map as it might not work.

Yes, that's definitely what I'm finding... tons of MTB resources and many mentions of single-track (obviouslyl a no-no).

Thanks!

Re: Kokopelli Trail in one day?

Doing it one day is going to be pushing it Mike. Look up Woodman (James) at the KOA. He ran it with me, RadRod57 (Luke) and others in May. James should have a file for you.

TiFJ (Jeff) is in Ouray as well and Jake has his number. So, talk to those folks and see what they think.

Also, keep in mind that you are going to have to drive to Grand Junction (90 minutes) before you get to the trailhead.

I say, just drive with us to Moab on Sunday and join us for the Night Run on Poison Spider Mesa. That's going to be more fun than rushing through Kokopelli.

You can do the first leg, when you leave Yellow Jacket Canyon towards Dewey Bridge just take hwy 128 into Moab.
