DRL's are for one a few things. None are saftey issues.
1 - They are listed as "Standard Options" (never got that one, how can it be standard and optional at the same time?). Just one more thing to put on the sheet for sales purposes.
2 - To sell more light bulbs. I don't know how often I see vehicles going down the road with just one DRL on. Pay attention some time, you'll be amazed how many there are.
3 - To burn more gas:

One more thing. As a motorcyclist, I wish they would keep DRL's away from cars. This was one more thing that made motorcycles stick out in traffic. Now they just get lost in a sea of DRL's.
DRL's suck, and if I can deactivate 'em, I will.
