Black does indeed show everything. Its extremely difficult to maintain a black finish. If you don't do basic things like wash the surface by hand, in linear strokes, you'll have swirl mark city within a year of ownership. The reason is because the clear coat is backgrounded by black, thus showing every flaw in the clear coat, including poor washing technique. In trucks, most don't care because hell, they're trucks! They go offroad and get dirty!
But in automobiles, folks tend to care alittle more.
Regarding the masking causing orange peel, I say impossible. The clear coat is baked on, the adhesive they use to apply the masking will not damage the clear coat. If anything, the masking magnifies what orange peel was already in the paint.
