Talking NC Off-Road Expedition Ideas?

Hey fellow South Easterns!

Since I can't get the FJ to the Australian outback this summer, I am in need some local help. I'm looking for some ideas for an upcoming vacation, preferably NC area unimproved roads/trails that are more expeditionary in nature than rock crawling. For instance, one of the most memorable off-road adventures I've had was taking an all off-road trip from Yucca Valley, CA up to Big Bear Lake, CA. You know, the kind of road where the neighbors post a sign that says "Trespassers Will Be Shot".

Mountains, Piedmont, or the Beach, or a road through all three!

Thanks!
