spring-like sound under steering wheel when off-roading.

Took my '08 fj cruiser off roading for a test drive for the first time...no mods yet. There was this spring-like rattling noise under the steering wheel column.

Any idea?

Manual transmission? If so, could it be the clutch pedal return spring?

I didn't think 4X2's had ATrac (I just noticed that the posting is in the 4X2 forum, so assumed it wasn't 4X4)...

I get that noise too when off road when the rig is shifting back and forth.
What mine is from is the keys hitting the steering column when swinging back and forth.
Next time out check and see if that is what it is.

Hard to tell, when no more description is provided. More details might help!

Re: spring-like sound under steering wheel when off-roading.

Mine does the same noise. It seems to be associated with the traction control pulling the throttle back.

I hear it a lot when driving through sandy washes.

Re: spring-like sound under steering wheel when off-roading.

I think you are talking about VSC (Traction Control). This also happens to 4x4 models when in 2 wheel drive.

Re: spring-like sound under steering wheel when off-roading.

The sound is near the pedals...down below where my feet are.

I have a 4x2 automatic, basic model so I don't have Atrac.

I get it every now and then (very rarely) when turning real sharp and slow on the streets too.

Thanks for the help everyone!
