Breathers for Rear Diff and Transfer Case revisited...

I ordered the Union, Breather, and fuel line last week to relocate the rear diffrential breather higher up into the vehicle. While under the car today doing some work and scouting options for this install I noticed that the rear diff actually has 2 breathers coming out of it. The lower one on the central part of the diff was what I was going to relocate. The upper one is attached to a tube which comes out of the front end of the diff near where the driveshaft enters. Here's a pic with the 2 breathers highlighted...

So I am wondering if anyone relocated the upper breather (coming out the front) as well as the lower one.

Also I could not find a breather located on the transfer case. Is there one?

Regards,
Alphonse

I relocated lower breather, ran it up near the fuel over flow tube. Raised it about a foot. Don't know about trans. case.

Well I did the job today. Considered routing to the firewall but decided to go the same route as you and went up the fuel filler tube and capped it just below the fuel inlet. Looks like it's about 36" off the ground now, so that should be plenty high

After doing the work I'm not sure this is really a necessary mod. When I unscrewed the breather from the pumpkin it let out quite a hiss as it vented out pressurized hot air. I had not driven the car for about 30 minutes so the pressure was being held for a while.

IMO judging by the amount of pressure it was containing insiude the diff it seems like it would be well enough sealed for being submerged 1-2 feet during a 3-5 minute fording.

Regards,
Alphonse

What a coincidence! I did my rear differential breather today as well and I also noticed that upper breather (coming out the front). I think I've read just about every FJ post regarding relocating the rear differential breather but no one has addressed relocating this other breather.

What part is this breather used for and does anyone think this breather is worth relocating?

Also, I took a different approach to relocating my rear differential breather. I popped out the rubber seal/plug just behind the driver's side mud flap and ran the rubber hose into the access panel where the jack is stored. I cut a small circular hole in the rubber seal/plug and then applied some silicon.

Re: Breathers for Rear Diff and Transfer Case revisited...

this is a newb question, but what's the advantage of moving the breathers?

Re: Breathers for Rear Diff and Transfer Case revisited...

raising your breathers will allow you to go through deeper water and mud crossings without possibly getting water, etc. into your tranny, x-fer, diff's.
