4x4 / Off-Road TechThis section contains all discussion related to taking the FJ Cruiser in Off-Road situations, 4x4 applications and any armor modifications.
I just got my first FJ last Tuesday, a black 08, stick. I am in a few other forums (ducati, FJR motorcycle, a few related to telescopes and astophotography) and I have to say, this appears to be a well run, well organized, friendly forum. I am happy to have found it. I have been reading and learning lots.
I read just about every post in this slider thread, and since I plan on doing nothing more than moderate aggressive trails ever, and I would like a slider that my 5' 5" wife can use to step up with, I am thinking this is my best bet:
Trail-Gear
Construction - 1 3/4" round for outer, inner tube, and legs, fully welded and gusetted
Attachment - Bolt-on, hardware included
Finish - Unfinished
Price - $299.00 including shipping(!)
If anyone has a bad experience or thinks I am making a mistake, please yell!
I thought i'd throw this slider design/contsruction questions out there since I plan on purchasing some in the near future.
I noticed that there are pretty much 2 different types. A straight evenly built type & a type that has a protruding hoop that sticks out towards the rear tire.
Question#1. What is the diff between the 2? (does the hoop give it some type of added benefit?
One if the other major diffs I noticed was how much the slider protruded away from the body, some are pretty close & some are way out there.
Question#2. Any pros & cons between closer to the body verses farther away besides making contact sooner with an obsticle?
Last thing a few types are actually angled up a bit & not built straight out horizontal/flat e.g. Demello's slider.
Question#3. Pros & cons flat vs. angled up?
Thanks for your input!

Well, I guess our site is not up to date. I ordered them on line tonight and they now powder coat them for "free", but they do charge for shipping. It was $38, which is not to bad, and cheaper than powder coating.
they ended free shipping a couple months ago due to the rising cost of shiping
but yes they are coming powder coated so i say its worth it even more so now!

Are the smitty built "step bars" considered sliders?
didn't see those on the list
I would not think so. Even if they are bolted to the frame, they still have the supports underneath the rail which would not allow them to "slide" off of rocks. My guess is they are bolted to the body like most steps are and not the frame.

I ordered these late Sunday night, got them before noon today (wed) from CA to WA (near Seattle). Took me about an hour to get them on, fit was perfect. Great company to deal with, I recommend them.

Sorry it's taken so long to get back on this one.
1 - The "hoop" that you see a few of the sliders is help keep rocks away from the body. Sometimes you might come up against, rather than on top, of a rock and it can get caught up in the rear wheel well after it passes the slider. This extra protrusion at the back of the slider might help with kicking the rear end out so to speak to keep this from happening. It also makes for a little larger step to aid in getting up to your roof rack.
2 - You pretty much have this one grasped. No real benefit to either way considering they are built correctly, although a slider that sticks out further is going to keep the rocks further away from your truck if. As for the Demello, I think the angle helps out when you are in an off camber situation as it provides for a flater surface when sliding over the rocks at an angle. The Dems also have a flat slider underneath the truck for when going over rocks while on the level.
3 - See above two answers
