Mythbusters show on line failure

This past week, Mythbusters tested the "myth" regarding being "cut in half" by a broken cable. So, they tied up some fresh pigs and busted some cable trying to cut one in half. They couldn't do it. They loaded a cable to 40K lbs and cut it but it didn't "cut it in half" as the myth claims. They did do some major damage to the pig, just no sliced ham.

I didn't agree with their technique which would truly represent a line failure (something we may see on a winch) but it wasn't far off. They used a model in the beginning to try and find the place/direction of the line travel after breaking/cutting, placing the pig near the end of that path.

My biggest issue was that they were cutting the line instead of loading it to the breaking point. I think that the line would have shown much more "whipping" with it being strained to the break point instead of cutting it. Even though they used some pretty heavy "cable", they didn't reach 75% of its rated load before cutting.

Yet, it was very interesting to see their "busting" the myth of being cut in half by a cable.

I often don't particularly agree with their techniques when investigating myths, but holy crap what a fun job that must be.

True they did not cut the pig in half, but they did state that the forces created with the break and impact would KILL you...

Re: Mythbusters show on line failure

remember that movie Men of Honor with Bobby Deniro and Cuba Gooding? It was the true story of Carl Brashear and how he over came losing his leg to a cable break on board a Naval ship. He was the first African American Navy diver among many other great accomplishments. Cool story and movie.

Re: Mythbusters show on line failure

they didn't use live pigs. Can you imagine the public outcry if they had? Now THAT is cutting edge TV.
