I've gotten to really like the way the Duplicolor spray-on truck
bed liner from Pep Boys (et al) behaves. Dries insanely fast and
the overspray that goes on the garage floor is black powder by
the time it hits the floor and so can just be swept up...no drop
cloths required. Lots of ventalation, though! This stuff is
really stinky!
I kind of wish it was a bit 'harder' when dry, that's all.
I powdercoated my bumper per recommendation of my friend that owns a body shop. plus I dont have the type of room in my condo nor its surroundings to paint such a big item, having said that I plan to spray my sliders, and I think they may take a bigger beating than a bumper. If my bumper takes a bigger beating than my sliders I need to not be on trails...
I'm with Micrad, some things you spray, some you powdercoat. Since I wouldn't be too hard on my wheels, it would be better for me to powdercoat them. For others that are hard on their wheels, definitely rattle can them. same goes for sliders and bumpers. It just depends on how hard you will be on them. Judging by pics on here, everybody is a candidate for the ol' rattler.
Is it OK to "patch" powdercoat with rattle can? My sliders have taken a beating!

flat black rustoleum works great as a touch up to powerdercoat
As far as the topic:
I'm split. I say powdercoat bumpers.. but spray sliders. I rarely hit my bumper on things so hard that it kills the powdercoat. I like the added looks, grip (yes I've stood on my bumper), and protection from little things.
I got my sliders powdercoated just for the grip on the top. There is tons of spray paint on the bottoms of my sliders now though.
Powdercoat all armor as a base layer coat. Once on the trail and I get some trail rash, I just spray.
This keeps everyone happy and also helps support the local powdercoat shops. I also do this as the powdercoat guys cleans up the mess I made welding In all honesty powdercoating has come down in price significantly that it's almost a wash. Also it saves you a lot of time from prepping and spraying and cleaning up too! For me time is money and I'd much rather give my hard earned cash to my powdercoat guys to do it right instead of me trying to waste hours spraying it down myself with the rattle can.
if you're your yer yore yor going to beat it up spray makes sense. Easily scratched but easily brought back to life. Powder is more durable day to day, but beats up just as easily as paint off road. Powder doesn't fix so easily and costs lots more.
This is key. Powder coating has better salt spray / UV protection so for something like a bumper or roof rack or light bar it is a better choice. Rock rails it is not because they WILL get scratched down to the metal, so touch up is easier with a rattle can versus re-powdering

Just got my bumper from All PRO AND GONNA SPRAY IT BABY. Wish me luck, WILL POST PICS AFTER THE ORDEAL IS DONE. Fiirst gotta figure out how to install winch! Please PM me with any advice on winch install and bumper install, to be be honest, this is all new to me. I want to do the install myself, but insight would would be welcomed. Anyone in central jersey?!!!!.
For those of you with a roof rack, the Rustoleum black paint with hammered finish matches almost perfectly. It really looks similar to a powdercoat finish, and is obviously easy to touch up.
