How long can you store gas in a jerrycan for? Does it "go bad" eventually? Also, common sense tells me not to fill it all the way because gasoline expands and contracts a lot with the temprature, any other things I should know or watch out for? Thanks for the help.
Yeah I was thinking of filling a 5 gal can just before I go wheeling somewhere remote and using it as part of my next fillup if I don't use it while out in the field. I'm sure it's not too safe driving around with a 5 gal tank of gas strapped to your roof or in the cargo area for day to day driving. But was wondering if I could just leave it in my garage until the next time it was needed? Or should I fill a fresh can everytime I head out?
interesting. My Rover has been sitting for a year with a full tank of gas (but I had added fuel stabilizer). Is it time to run that tank dry and refill?

Everyone think about how long you have gas sitting in a can for your lawn mower. Mine could easily be a year old before I drain it completely and refill it and the mower still runs fine.
If you don't use it wheeling just dump it in your mower or your trucks tank next time it gets low. Fuel stablizer for your application is probably not needed and expensive.

A lawnmower is (1) generally a 2 cycle engine, (2) the only performance you care about is cutting the grass, (3) miles per gallon is not a factor, (4) you will never get 100,000 miles on the spark plug, and (5) the exhaust noisy and sinks with old or new fuel.
You demand a lot more from your FJ Cruiser so you (1) change the oil religiously at a preset mileage, (2) record each fill up and calculate mileage, (3) expect the vehicle to start flawlessly each time, (4) depend on power response when you demand it, and (5) notice every unusally noise coming from under the hood.
Finally, gasoline is blend to meet seasonal conditions. If you put summer blend gasoline into the vehicle on a cold winters day, it will have poorer start characteristics. Conversely if you put winter blend gasoline into the vehicle on a hot summer day, If will smell very gassy because winter fuel is blended with more light hydrocarbons from cold temperature starting.
