4x4 / Off-Road TechThis section contains all discussion related to taking the FJ Cruiser in Off-Road situations, 4x4 applications and any armor modifications.
You have all seen the plastic grills on the FJ just in front of the windshield. The one all the way over on the passenger side opens up into a compartment that is accessible in the engine bay by a small plastic panel that looks like it could be popped out.
So, I spent a few minutes to piece together some foam core and came up with this. Please keep in mind that it could be way more attractive in plastic.
Something like this would keep a snorkel installer from having to cut a large hole in the fender.
What do you guys think? It will look better when it has been designed in Solidworks CAD. I was thinking about doing some laser cut bent-up sheetmetal to form the enclosure and use some aviation scat tubing to do the ducting from the engine.
I think you are going in the right direction. However, the snorkel is the least of the worries related to deep water travel. From my understanding, there are many issues that have to be dealt with much "lower" than the air intake.

Looks good. The air inlet would have a straight shot if you DID cut a hole in the fender. The actual intake is up inside the fender. The slots in the wheel well are only there to bring the air in, the tube for air intake faces the passenger, inside the fender.
The design of your snorkel is good!
