TCao, As always, Informitive!! and just in time. Right now I'm leanning towards the Man-a-fre skids, but I want to wait and see what Jason(Demello) comes up with here in the next couple of weeks. Spoke to him on the phone Friday. He said he had a bunch going to powdercoat as we spoke.
GOOD JOB ON THE COMPARO BRO!!!!!

Sweet. When does the option 2 gastank skid come out? I'm all about rediculous amounts of protection.

Re: Complete skid plates comparison

I really want the bud built, however I just noticed in the cross member pics it seems like you lose about 5-6" around the transfer case it is just open air? You could get that back by lifting but, that is alot of clearance gone? Is it just the pic angle or do they sit that way?

Thanks

There's just a little loss in clearance since the skid is under the exhaust crossover but much more protection in that area now too.

No words on version 2 of the fuel tank skid. BTW, I just noticed that Bud is the official skid plates supplier for the 2007 Toyota Trail Team. Congratulations Bud.

The pic on his website from the side is just a bad angle. Bud once the tax return gets in I am headed your way.

The 2-inch hole in the BudBuilt skid plate gives just enough room for a socket to undo the oil drain plug and reach in to wipe off the splashes. When I pulled off the stock skid plate with the big oval opening for the oil drain plug, I found that the oil did splash all over the skid. So, for the most protection for your engine case, I think I can either live with having to remove the BudBuilt mid skid plate for each oil change (every 5,000 miles) or just reach in from the access hole and side to clean the oil splashes. BTW, I just came back from today's run through Coyote Canyon in Anza Borrego and I am so glad I installed the BudBuilt skids before this run.

Re: Complete skid plates comparison

Great thread!!! Very important to me since I'm still researching the FJ to decide if it is right for me.

To reiterate what HammerHead said...
One question on the skid plates. From the pictures, most seem like they would make oil changes a real PITA, which ones still allow easy access to the filter and drain plug? What about access to other maintenance points?

The oil filter is accessed from above right behind the fan shroud so no issue. I believe that only the DeMello design requires dropping the front/engine skid to access the oil drain plug (no acess hole). You don't want too big of an access hole in the skid plate anyway. It's not that much work to remove the skid plate for an oil change every 5,000 miles.
