What The @#$1@ Atrac grinds/pops out of gear?

..SO strange... anyone who lives in colorado knows that we just got dumped on.. 2-3 feet where I am..

Well... I was driving around in the snow.. I would put the FJ in 4 Lo (Manual Transmision) and also put the atrac on...

I would encounter a very strange thing.. when i would drive straight into a bank of a large drift of snow about 2-3 feet..real slow like.. with the atrac on.. the atrac would pop and grinds... now it seems to be still in gear, but makes funny noises,grinds..and slips..... an bounces wiggles my shifter around.. when i would try to move..!!!!

Sounds awful!... grinding and no movement of the vehicle, now i dont know what could possibly be going on and if all FJ's would do the same thing..It only hapens when I procede to drive through High snow..almost high centering the car but not cause it just crunches down the snow..

I am charging my video camera now so I can try to catch it in action.. (so i can show it to the dealer)...

But you guys have any ideas?.. i would never have even noticed this happening except for the large amount of snow goin on.. I would say that it definetly does NOT seem right.. it litterly pops and grinds while still in gear with the atrac on..it loses all power.. like slipping... it does not happen in 4Lo with the atrac off.. so, it def has something to do with the atrac...

I was thinking that maybe he atrac was pulling all power the all wheels cause all the wheels were slipping?.. i could even understand if it did that, but it sounds awful.. grinds and pops out of gear.. car wont budge..... not very gracefull like

Any Ideas... Please chime in.. I will post video if an when i get it..
Has anyone esle had this experience ?

Please help me figure this out.. I think it may effect all of us...

the car has 3000 miles on it and has been babied... so it should not be a problem with the vehicle

Thanks

Hmmm...seems like you at least deserve an answer...geez. I have an AT, but I'm surprised you haven't had any bites from our MT owners here.

It has been well over a month since I have been on the trails, but no trouble with ATRAC. I beat the crap out of it too until I decided I should engage the rear locker.

I do have an MT.

I have the MT. Yours is working fine. I have found that the A-trac doesn't really help much in loose stuff like snow, sand, deep gravel.

My thoughts exactly, that's why the a-trac,difflock mod is awesome, have had similiar problems w/ a-trac, works great most the time but occasionaly it does what you just explained. Was your 4 low working fine after that?Hopefully this helps, would be nice to hear and see video.

Re: What The @#$1@ Atrac grinds/pops out of gear?

Hey.. thanks for some of the replies...
And the pic the the fj pulling jeep recovery duty is priceless...

as for the atrac... yeah.. you guys seem to think it is ok.. yah well i hope so.. it just seems to be a disconcerting sound... now i will say.. It would not happen often, i would have to drive around for just the right snow, size shape and depth.....

Well.. the thing is .. the way I was testing out the strange sound I realized that it really would not happen under normal circumstances... Only when I would encounter major snow that almost would high center the front of the car.. I guess taking all the weight off the front wheel.. and who knows.. makiaybe the back wheels were spinning too.. so.. I am thinking that atrac on.. all wheels spinning (crappy stock shoes) this would cause some strange reaction.... who knows...

I dont think I would have even nocied it untill this HUGE ASS snow hit the Colorado Front Range... And just for the record... The FJ did not get stuck once.. and it should have.. this snow is deep..

Happy Holidays to you all...
