Optima Battery - Which one

I'm looking to buy an Optima battery as a second for my FJ for lights, winch, etc, but I don't know which one to get. I also need to get the Optima tie downs going as I have had so many requests for this.

What battery did you use and why?

Anyone have some measurements for me so I can make the tiedowns while I track down a Canadian dealer or what for one off ebay?

Thanks in advance!

Joel

Re: Optima Battery - Which one

hey joel you ever thought of making the fit universal by making more clearance up the center for different kinds of batteries (over the service ports )?

just was thinking about it i may be way off

Yellow Top for it's deep cycle.

Check out Odyssey batteries too (heard they're good). (Odyssey Drycell Batteries)

Re: Optima Battery - Which one

I use an Optima D34 yellow top as the aux battery (the D31A won't fit on the right fender for my application). More info on Optimas here:

I think the actual clamping width may be different too. The current clamps are a very good fit on the stock battery.

I think some of the optimas have the ports even futher apart and no fill caps...

Thanks for the info and link.

Keep the suggestions and batt types coming please.

Do a search for Dual Battery and you will find pictures, installation instructions and so forth. Oh, and go yellow top...deep cycle is important for aux battery as it can take draining to almost nothing, while standard battery will fry.

Blue top marine battery. Had one in a 4 runner once. It's good for
the vibrations when going off road and also make your sound system
a lot better.

Very true, and they come right back to life after a good charge. Deep cycles will last a log time then suddenly drop voltage, a normal battery will drop voltage right from the go.

Re: Optima Battery - Which one

Might want to look at Optima Group31A. It as 30 percent more starting /or winching capacity- freezing temperature. Batteries don't like cold any more than we do, and operate better. 900 Cold Cranking Amps @ 0 deg. F.

Re: Optima Battery - Which one

difficult to fit the 31a unless you do it sideways.

I used the yellowtop 34 as my 2nd battery, it really is the standard deep discharge battery for offroad use with extreme vibration and shock resistance and excellent deep discharge characteristics plus plenty of power to start your rig also if needed. Most folks go this route. See the posts by sbechtold
