I'm thinking about upgrading to some 16" steel wheels and some MT tires (probably around 33's).
I spent about 2 hours looking at different lifts and reading reviews/installs from people on here (thanks to the search function). I realize that everyone probably "loves" there lift so I'll take all comments with a grain of salt.
Enough rambling! Here's what I need:
I usually go off-roading once or twice a month. It's been more frequent lately because of being off a good bit for Christmas. I want the lift for a few reasons (1. clear bigger tires, 2. better GC for mild rock climbing, 3. I think it looks better).
I don't need to go out and get Donahoe Racing gear because I'm not willing to drop that kind of cash and I'm not looking to make this thing into the complete off-road machine (it's still my daily driver). I don't want to drop large coins on this project but I don't want to go out and get the cheapest solution if it's going to severly alter the ride or jeopardize the dependability of my FJ.
If you're a vendor and want to send me a PM with what you would suggest for me I'd be happy to read your reponse.
Thanks to all who read or reply!
PS: Right now I'm thinking about the OME kits but I haven't convinced myself on spending that much money.

I'll chime in and recommend the OME kit. I think it is definitely worth the money, and like you I did not...shoot could not afford the DR kit, although I really like the Donahoe stuff. But truthfully, OME is all I need right now anyway. 100% satisfied.
My partner & I both bought FJ's & had OME lifts done on both - he did the "heavy" & I did the "medium" load set - the heavy lifted 3" - the medium 2 1/2" - I prefer the ride of the medium - only recommend "heavy" if you're going to add bumbers/winch etc. We both love OME - as for wheels & tires - we both put "RockCrawler 87" 16" steel wheel and Bridgestone Revo's - IMO the best set up! The Revo's are great off road, excel in snow & quiet on the road.
I am in the same boat. The reason I want the DRs is becasue of the extreme weather coating but may go with the OME because of the price. Still cant decide.

I plan to go with a Demello front bumper sometime this year (possibly) but probably won't go with a winch anytime soon. I'm probably still safe with the medium.

I simply can not justify going with the DR's. I know how you feel.

If you do not need the adjstability of the Hoes, and ado not live where they are designed to be run, they are a waste of money.
Face it, they are a desert racing style coilover. Most of us who bomb the desert on a regular occasion love them. but there are better alternatives for most of the country. All Pro is the Coilover most guys need. and if you do not need the coilover, go OME. After all, why pay for something you do not need. The benefits of coilovers 95 percent of users will never use.

Putting money and adjustability aside for a moment, isn't a coilover system likely to result in a better all-around ride (on and offroad) than the OME as well?
I definitely want something that will equal if not substantiall improve upon the factory ride. I also want something that will easily accomodate the weight of an aftermarket bumper (sans winch).
Pretending for a minute that money is no object, what do you suggest?

thinking a coilover is better than stock is way off
they are more adjustable than stock, they are usually valved for a end
My honest suggestion, and remember, I run The Donahoes and absolutely love them, Most guys here will never use a set of Donahoes in the terrain they are designed for, the things excel at high speed desert bombing.
I I lived away from where I do today, like back east, I would go with the All Pro Off Road system, the valving is designed for the average terrain you are going to get into, and the road. If I did not need the adjustability of a coil over system, I would go with the OME system.
Now face this, if you want a better ride than the stock ride, do not lift, go have the system tuned as it is. when you lift you are changing the factory geometry making things work harder and at angles they were not designed to. so saying you want to lift and get a better ride is a misnomer, you would have to go with a redesigned system, well look how simple, All Pro sells that. darn how lucky can you get?
I know Donahoe sells a lot of stuff, and money being no object what would I do? Well I live where their system is the bomb. doing 40 to 45 across the desert on a set of hoes is a sensation you need to feel. I would like something stiffer on trails.
