4x4 / Off-Road TechThis section contains all discussion related to taking the FJ Cruiser in Off-Road situations, 4x4 applications and any armor modifications.
Mike, I think that if you are on a loose shale surface, and both locked rear tires are spinning the unit can see it as a offtraction situation and apply braking to the rear wheels
now I have engine torque going to the axles and braking being applied to the hubs
If you know anything at all about wheeling, you will reaslise this is not a good sitch to be in and a long walk can be ahead of you.
with locker on, I want assurence the Atrac is off
let me explain it in another way
torque is relitive to load applied
and with a open dif, if one side is loaded the torque is transffered to the other side keeping the torque off the loaded side.or to put it better, no torque is developed as the engine sees no load
now if the axle is locked and load is introduced suddently to either side then the torque is asorbed by the inner shaft, SNAP
breaking by the Atrac is load
BTW, Nissans have front atrac(ABLS) and rear locking function simultaneously. It is no big deal, it's been done already.
the ATRAC cant break an axle. you can drive right thru your brakes, especially in low range. locked is locked. if you axle hop hard enough on a locked axle while on the gas, driveshaft or axle breakage might occur, with or without atrac.
Let me try to get a point across. Atrac works on wheel speed differential, not torque sensing. There will be NO wheelspeed difference between your left and right rear tires when the locker is on. it will never turn on, but if it did, it woild just be a drag on the brakes. I have brake biased my jeep many times trying to get the open front to hook up. the rear axle didn't snap because of it. there also should not be a net front to rear difference because 4LO is standard locked mode as well, so both driveshafts should spin the same distance over a given path.
the worse that will happen is that the software might have a glitch when a hack is applied and the ABS/Atrac error code might come up and it won't work until you reset it.
Never said it has never been done, It is a potential problem
especially fi not engeineered to be on at the same time, Toyota wants it off.
tell you what, put up money for every broken axle that happens because of the 2 are used together, make a fund for us all to tap. that way you can prove you are correct,
Are you willing to do that?
Oh you can claim to be
but You will never do it.
nobody knows yet, there was some concern about the non locked FJ's having a different computer flash (p/n). i think you brought that up or something to that effect.

I don't need to put up any funds. An enthusiast will try to get more out of his FJ as soon as possible without any internet guarantees. This discussion should end, I conceed here, you may make the last comment if you wish. Unless it doesn't work due to some error code glitch that can't be overcome, I predict this will be 'The MOD' along with the $60 atrac switch mod for people who want to make it over obstacles on difficult trails. it'd be a damn shame for nissan to have that over the FJ. the rest of the drivetrain on the toy is probably superior (except for the VQ-40 motor of course).
Not having front atrac is like buying a glock 9mm with a double stack 17 round magazine, and then getting the 10 round CA legal mags instead.
I've tried to locate the switch (84988-35060), per the 2 local Toyota parts guy, the Toyota National System does not indicate this part is available in the US yet. Anyone get any better feed back?
Thanks
