I think I scared him off when I asked him to buy me the switch...... If I'm not mistaken, this is the second thread posted in regards to the A-TRAC hack. I'm wondering if there is something circulating around the web in regards to this.....might be worth investigating. That, or there may be a few disgruntled anti-FJ folks out there that want to spread evil and general discontent.....speaking of...did any new owners out there immediately romp on it and get those RPM's up nice and high to "break in your FJ properly" like the one thread mentioned? Personaly, I opted for the guidance in the owner's guide. Hmmmm...on board computer that records everything?
If you want A-TRAC get it installed at the freakin factory. This is certainly the way to go! You get some more goodies with it and the vehicle is still a bargain.
I have access to the parts, service and wiring manuals but not to the vehicle themselves. As far as I can tell, ALL of the FJCs rolling out of the factory ALREADY have A-TRAC. Some people are paying for a $3500 option package to get it while lies latent in the rest of the production due to the lack of a switch.
Rover, do you have acess to any vehicles? It would be really easy to disprove my theory by pulling the switch panel out and looking at the wires back there. Compare two vehicles, one with and one without.
Also, I have no use for any of the "goodies" in up1 and up2 except for the locker and A-TRAC. I would much rather buy the locker for 3 bills, a switch for 60 bucks and have the other 3 grand to go for more useful mods...

Would Toyota go through the trouble to design two VSC systems? One with and one without A-TRAC? They all seem to share the same system components. What Alex is saying may not be that far fetched.
Quote:
2. ABS with EBD, BA, TRAC, AUTO LSD, A-TRAC and
VSC OPERATION
(a) The skid control ECU calculates vehicle stability
tendency based on the signals from the 4 wheel
speed sensors, the yaw rate and deceleration
sensor and the steering angle sensor. In addition, it
evaluates the results of the calculations to
determine whether any control actions (control of
the engine output torque by electronic throttle
control and of the brake fluid pressure by the
hydraulic brake booster) should be implemented.
So here's my silly question of the day. If I do try this out, how do I know if it works or not ? I mean, if I'm four wheeling how can I tell if the system is actually helping to keep traction to the non-free spinning tires? Not getting stuck in the mud does'nt mean anything. Is the A-Trac light coming on when I throw the switch a good sign and mean that I've cheated my way past all the bling-bling ?
Ickman,
You will need an Intelligent Tester (handheld device to read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes) to make sure. It will have to be an inside job. I do not know if it is only just the switch but I plan to buy just a base MT FJ and not get sucked into the waxing on all the fluff. If Toyota can retro fit A-TRAC when all this craziness dies down some then I would consider it. Otherwise I'm not biting.

Hey guys,
I'm with you on the allure of being able to do it, I just won't on mine till after the warranty goes away. It scares me a little too much, and I doubt it would really benefit me for the "Eastern TN", "Central KY" terrain I would use it on.
I'm interested in what you know about the parameters of the "event data recorder". I suspect it is there for far more than one reason; but one large reason could be to prevent inexpensive mods like this.
Well, not prevent them but deter owners from "stealing" the A-TRAC, etc. I know if I was the manufacturer, this would be an A-1 reason to deny a warranty claim.

this is NOT stealing.
if the system is there and all you do is install a switch to turn the system on............how on earth does this void the warranty?
In time the price of the FJC will go down.
And all the questions, including this one will be answered. Oh, and all the answers will come from owners...........NOT dealer reps!!!!
