Re: Pics of All Pro Front Bumper Powder Coated on Voodoo Blue
Yes they work with air bags. They are deployed with a deceleration module, not a "crumple switch" so the bumper is not an issue. You can get the bumper plain and powder coat it any color. Someone even powder coated theirs Voodo Blue. Here's mine in black:
Re: Pics of All Pro Front Bumper Powder Coated on Voodoo Blue
All Pro has just now started offering powdercoated bumpers, previously they were only sold in bare metal with the customer being required to paint or powdercoat the bumper locally. We contracted with a supplier to handle powdercoating and packing/boxing for us so now we can get the bumper to the customer without getting scratched up by UPS. An overwhelming majority of our customers requested black so thats when we went with.
Re: Pics of All Pro Front Bumper Powder Coated on Voodoo Blue
The powder coat is pretty tough. I have chipped it in 1 place. I touched it up with a dab of flat black paint and you can not see the defect even with close inspection.
In the past some cars (GM at least), had a crumple switch located in the bumper mounting bracket. If you ran into something, the bracket crumpled/compressed which forced the switch contacts together and set off the bags. If you altered the bumper, the bags may not work. The contacts would also corrode and render the car "airbag free"
The FJ has a sealed module mounted on the frame. The switch will close with rapid deceleration (impact). I do not know how many G's are required to activate it, but bumping into something at low speed won't fire it. It is totally independant of the bumper and its mounting. I have only seen 1 company claim that their bumper is airbag compatable-that is ARB. All are, but may not want to publish that as a general rule to decrease liability. Interestingly, the FJ uses other motion sensing modules. There is a yaw module in the console neat the shifter that is part of the traction control system. The high tech electronics are pretty impressive (at least to me) in this vehicle. It certainly contributes to its excellent safety performance.
I had a local powder coater do my bumper. She charged $150 which I gather is about the price most pay. Just find someone that does it a lot, and you should get a quality job
I also like the black on the VD blue and will probably paint my bezel, mirrors, and door handles black too.
BTY, I am extremely happy with my bumper-great guys at All Pro and great approach angle!
Re: Pics of All Pro Front Bumper Powder Coated on Voodoo Blue
So the All Pro Rear bumper won't effect air bags as well right, if it still has the rapid deceleration there?
Another question i had was where can i find instructions on installing both bumpers & how exactly do you get the mirrors and door handles powder coated black? I assume you remove them, but is there anyone in my area (Connecticut) that will do it?'
Re: Pics of All Pro Front Bumper Powder Coated on Voodoo Blue
Rear bumper-no problem with crash sensors.
There is a thread on removing mirrors and door handles. Looks like a PITA. I was going to mask it and use plastic spray paint to do it. I recently started a thread about "painting plastic" and forum members gave me great tips on products to use. BTY, you can't powder coat anything but metal (maybe ceramic?) because the process uses high heat to melt/bond the plastic powder coat to the metal.
Bezel is the silver plastic piece around the front grill and headlights. See "painted bezel thread" for different colors. There is a picture of a black bezel on a VD blue that looks great. That thread is worth looking at to see Graham's sweet retro colored FJ. Sand beige with white bezel. Gotta love it!
You could go by a body shop and get an estimate on the painting-shouldn't be too much. Look up "powder coating" or auto painting in the yellow pages. The bumper mut be in pieces to powder coat of course. Take the bolts with you-they can coat the bolt heads for you (not the threads) but you may chip it when you apply a wrench. Just get some Testors flat black model paint at Walmart and dab a little on the bolt heads
