Re: Jack Stand Recommendation

Jack stands, never rely on the jack to hold the vehicle if you are working on,around 'specialy if you are under it.

Re: Jack Stand Recommendation

BOTH! Used together...

One gets the vehicle up enough to place jack stands. Did I misunderstand your two choices?

Back in my younger (aka foolish & poorer) days, we would use CINDER BLOCKS rather than jack stands. Now, wiser, knowing how cinder blocks can crack and split relatively easily, I would NEVER go under a vehicle without STEEL jack stands properly placed.

Re: Jack Stand Recommendation

Don't ever crawl under a vehicle up on just a jack. The seal that holds the fluid in place on a hydrualic floor jack costs ten cents. Would you want to put your life in the hands of something that cheap?

Re: Jack Stand Recommendation

I plan on using ramps and chocks if I am under the FJ. I wasn't sure if one type was better than the other on the jacks, but the idea of using the hydro to get the jack under makes sense.

Glad to hear it. I used to assume that everyone knew not to trust a jack, that is until a buddy in high school almost cut his hand off with a license plate after the truck slipped of the jack.

Re: Jack Stand Recommendation

Buy the best jack stands you can afford and the best Jack. ALWAYS use both together when working on a lifted vehicle and even use redundant jack stands.

When I was in high school I watched in horror as a friend's '68 'Cuda slipped off the jack and SINGLE stand and pinned him underneath .... Fortunately, we got it off him quickly, but he still TWENTY-TWO YEARS later, has the scars on his neck from a hot exhaust pipe !

That taught me very well to be extra careful.

Damn that sucks, lucky though.

I'll be working a cold system, I'm not taking any chances and 40 for the high tomorrow, I'll be cold too while on the ground.

Thanks everyone for the safety tips

Re: Jack Stand Recommendation

Oh and make sure your jack can lift pretty high. many of the ones I have had are ok for cars but when you get into things like the FJ with lots of suspension flex they just can reach high enough.
