Do Rock Ski's make your insurance go up??

Hi all, I was at the dealer the other day, and the only FJ's they had were equiped (or screwed) with over priced side steps....god I hate those. I mentioned I wanted to add rock skis, so I had no intention of paying 400-600.00 for crappy soccermom side steps.

Then he tells me "your insurance will go up if you add those". I'm thinking...WTF? I've never head of that before...and there are TONS of aftermarket companies that make side bars....like smittybuilt, warn, etc....and I have never heard of them adding to your insurance.

He says "yea, they tack on another 50.00 a month for nothing".

I think it's a stupid kid with no actual real world knowledge on this. He was quite young....too young to sell me a car....so does anyone know for sure?

Re: Do Rock Ski's make your insurance go up??

I figured he was full of crap, but I haven't had a vehicle on full coverage with that kind of off road stuff on it....my last truck was liability ONLY, but it was a classic also, which makes it hard to insure for full coverage

Also part of the reason I sold it...if it gets totaled, I'm just screwed.

Noone has had their insurance ask about things like that? I have Geico, and they are really great....but I want to know everything beforehand.

I agree. I hate that dealer, it's just the one in town and I wanted to just look around, and drive on on the street. I had only driven one at the International car show off road thing Toyota setup. I wanted to get an idea of street feelings. I mentioned the windshield too, and he was like "Really? I've never heard that!". LOL

Besides....the alignment was off. I will not buy a vehicle with alignment off. I don't care if they can't do it right....they had better damn well learn pretty quick!

Re: Do Rock Ski's make your insurance go up??

I am pretty sure that I have never had an insurance company ask me more than year, make, model, and VIN except in the case of full coverage on classics and for that they want an actual appraisal usually by one of their field guys or an authorized shop.

Re: Do Rock Ski's make your insurance go up??

I used to have a Ford Explorer with 8 inches of lift and 35 inch boggers, rock rails, winch mount bumper, wilderness roof rack, basically the works and my insurance never went up a dime and I even reported all of my mods to my insurance company.

I think the addtional insurance costs would be because of the increased value of the vehicle not because the insurance company would be worried about it being taken off-road.
