It looks like the steps come down and not just straight out.. I've got the stock TOY rails on order but might just tossing in my 2 cents.

Is there a design reason for such large steps hanging down?

I'd like a rail that stays under the vehicle like the TOY but maybe has a flat spot on top where you could get your toe between the rail and the body for a little step if needed.
They mount where the running boards mount not off the frame. If you were to hit them on anything they will destroy your rocker panels. They seem to be more Bling than function...I still think a little modification to the stock rails would be the way to go

Re: Rock rails

Yes, they do mount to where running board would go and they do not mount to the location of the rock rails. But they appear to mount into some pretty thick steal (if your reach under and feel around), I don't think they'd rip off anything. But if you sole intent is to use this for off road, as stated above they stick out more than rock rails. I bought these so I can access the roof rack much easier. So the functionality would be based on the intent.

I think youmay be right in that the there are indeed two (2) mount locations - when I removed my Running Boreds (pun intended), I noticed the RB's do NOT mount in the same holes as the rock rails. The rails mount to the frame, while the RB's mount in 6 other holes (look for pre-installed bolts if you don't have them) on the underside.

Re: Rock rails

If they cant support the weight of the truck they are not rock rails or sliders..

Those look great and functional for their inteded purpose.. A step.. but their mounting point makes them a damage multiplier.. Thread title is misleading..

thread title's not misleading as in i was intending on asking about all the products currently out there and folks' experience with the products. i agree, the step things are not sliders and therefore wont be getting them. angry andy has a posting with sliders made by the folks at bentup out in sacto i believe. ive been hearing more and more about aftermarket companies ramping up product lines for the FJ so i thought hopefully people'd post what they'd heard so we can get an idea of what's out there.

welcome from AK!!

sage advice
we built a set today, have to bring them to the powder coater monday, but I did not like the Toy ones, I had a few issues with them and 3 hopurs of cutting DOM, notching, bending, and welding to 3/16th plate and it was over. got the protection I wanted, the shear I wanted, angles look like they will work slideing around and the things stick out far enough to prevent a car door from hitting my FJ
