Re: SCUBA Driver Rear Differential Breather MOD

Ok, my turn to do this wonderful mod. My union cost $11 at Schaumburg Toyota but it was close to work so I just bit the bullet.

Thanks to all who have provided information on this breather extension, but I want to especially thank Shadow-Warrior for making it so easy to follow instructions, a thorough write up, and for finding the cool breather filter which gives it that killer look as well.

On to the pics.

Mine is not too much different than SW's, but I do want to show a couple of things.

Here is a view of where these two breathers are in relation to each other and far enough back from the rear of the FJ that you can see the locations easily

I did not round the corners of my 16 ga, but rather cut them on a 45

With the relays to my PIAA's taking up the driver side of the engine bay, I opted to put my new breather on the passenger side.

Whichever side you put it in, just make sure it does not interfere with the prop arms for the hood.

Here is the finished "T". They did not have a 1/4 x 1/4 x 1/8 "T" where I went so I got a universal one. Due to that, it fit nicely in an existing mounting hole.

I think I have been a scuba driver for some time, but now I can do it with peace of mind

Re: SCUBA Driver Rear Differential Breather MOD

Outstanding job and write up! I like the mount you made, it looks great! I see you went with a Red one too, I would have thought you would have gotten the Yellow one to match “Taira’s” outfit? Great Job Dragon, you’re the First to do my actual MOD. Thanks Buddy, looks Awesome. Dragon gets ***STICKERS*** You are now an Official SCUBA Driver, welcome to the club

Re: SCUBA Driver Rear Differential Breather MOD

Guys, this is a great mod and one I plan as soon as I can. I appreciate your time invested in this write up.

I do have a question though. Is the e locker vent actually redundant since the e locker and rear diff communicate through the axle housing? If so couldn't you just vent the diff? If you dropped a warm axle into cold water, the diff breather would be the path of least resistance for incoming air and the e locker vent would not suck in water.
I guess that doing both is easy enough, but thought I would ask.
Thanks

I looked at it, I do believe there is an air space that is "Shared", but if you only ran one line, you still run the potential of "Sucking" in water with the one that was not relocated, and I won't want to just put a "Plug" in the other one that wasn't relocated.

Re: SCUBA Driver Rear Differential Breather MOD

I'm happy to report that the Mojave desert was "dry" today and there was no water to slosh through -- because I haven't done my mod yet. I bought parts but was too lazy to install them.

However, I was happy to have the BudBuilt skids on the beast because I left some red paint behind on rocks (and yes, it does make them look like they're bleeding)

Just as long as it was the rocks bleeding and not the old girl (FJ)

There were some tight spots and RICOVERDE crunched the R/R quarter panel on a rock wall he slid into. His FJ is new - like a couple of weeks old. The only paint I left behind was on the rocks under me. SKERSFAN left some black paint from his sliders in one particularly rough spot that he got out of purely through superior driving skills. I was getting out of the rig to pull a winch line to him when he bounced to safety. FJAMMING and MUDLOVINGFJ made it through without too much scratching and scraping. The ALL PRO rig showed up and rode at the rear of the procession to help any stragglers. (there were about 7 FJ's, a couple of Jeeps, a Land Rover and a 4Runner)

Who needs therapy when you have an FJ?

Will work for mods.

The ALL PRO rig was running Walker Evans rims with BFG 35's and I'm leaning toward the 35's even though I've told everyone I was going to buy 33's. That rig is a real animal.

I have FJ envy. NOW I need a shrink!

Re: SCUBA Driver Rear Differential Breather MOD

Thanks Shadow-I bought the T today and will hook up both lines. Bring an extra sticker out to Ouray for a fellow Arkie, and I'll trade you a beer for it.

Yellow Submarine requesting Scuba Certification

I just finished up relocating the rear diff and e-locker breathers. Ended up having to use brass fittings to make up the t-connection, no one had the t-connection others have used here in stock.

Shadow, great thread, thanks everybody for your help and answering my questions.
