....Someone suggested that Toyota is lying about the fording depth they claim for the FJ. I don't think they are lying. The stock breathers are spring plungers that don't let water in, just air out. Right? So, would it not be a better idea to move ALL the breathers into the cabin area to prevent them from getting debris in them? ....
I myself, just moved my stock breathers to a much
higher and safer location...
Re: SCUBA Driver Transmission, Transfer Case, Rear Differential & E-Locker Breather MOD
Hey to all
If the MT guys and gals need a DIA. I put one in my photo gallery
just click on one of the other DIA's I have there and then scroll down to see my whole gallery.. The MT does have a breather, just like the rear dif has, it is just a screw in application, same parts as you used on the rear diff to move it..
Here it is..
it is part number 33101U top of the page... Hope this helps...

This is just a thought after reading this and just playing around with ideas in my head. I was wondering if you could use an air filter off of a like Nitro powered RC car since they are so small as the filters for the breathers.

Yes you could (I used to race'em) and if you got the filter attached properly it would work fine.
EDIT: Something like this would work fine... I woulndn't trust the small zip's for extended periods of time in a truck that was off-roaded a lot.

OK, I've got a question. The whole reason for moving the breathers isn't really to prevent water from getting into the respective systems, but to prevent debris from forcing the breathers to stay open, which will in turn let water into the system. Right? Someone suggested that Toyota is lying about the fording depth they claim for the FJ. I don't think they are lying. The stock breathers are spring plungers that don't let water in, just air out. Right? So, would it not be a better idea to move ALL the breathers into the cabin area to prevent them from getting debris in them? I know I've seen the stock breathers under the hood just covered in mud and debris from deep mud crossing. That mud is full of pine needles and chunks of dirt and all kinds of things.
Yes, I use the term "Breather" very loosely. They really are a very crude "One Way Valve". Now with that being said, some have tried to come up with smaller tiny breathers etc. I personally would not go that route, here is why. Using the same premise that you have stated engine bays covers in MUD. The Scepter Filters have a MUCH Bigger "SURFACE AREA" than most of the ideas I have heard being passed around, but to each his own. If we say 90% of the Scepter filter gets covered in MUD, there is still 10% surface area that is not. Which would still be 98% more "Breathing room than the stock valve.
Now to your question, the answer is yes, it would be better to locate them inside the vehicle. I have been relocating my vehicle breathers for over 30 years inside my 4x4's, but most don't want to go this route because its drilling holes inside a 30K vehicle, etc. I'm not talking about the jack area. If I had run mine inside the jack area, I personaly would continue up out of it and make a bracket for them up along the rear driver side window area. This way it keeps them high and dry if the vehicle ever gets flooded in the rear.
Anyways thats my two sents on the subject.
I have also been thinking about the side benefits of using an actual "Open" breather filter as opposed to the stock one way valves. I know for a fact that the pressure "Builds" inside the diff housings, you only have to drive a little bit and pull up on the stock cap and hear the air rush in. My thoughts are now with them acutally breathing with no buildup of pressure, I would have to say that your fuilds will last longer due to no rise and spikes of heat. This should be an added benefit I would think, maybe someone that is a Fluid Engineer may want to put their two cents in on my thinking here.

Re: SCUBA Driver Transmission, Transfer Case, Rear Differential & E-Locker Breather M
uhhhh...i got stuck in the mud...underestimated depth...an F150 and subaru could not pull be out initially...but live and learn...now i know to observe topography before diving
I thought it was funny
my dad didn't
Heres the pics...
The FJ handled all the other mud puddles perfectly...I thought it was going to be a quick dive...but more like belly flop
I knew about issues with the rear differential...I checked it then and luckily it was not submerged...but do you think my tranny sucked up water? The whole left side is submerged...the right side is up high but I dunno...
I had the belts replaced...but the fj makes this whining noise in drive like when an old honda backs up...sounds like a belt but i just don't know...any other trouble I could have caused?
By the way I am definately doing these breather mods...
Re: SCUBA Driver Transmission, Transfer Case, Rear Differential & E-Locker Breather MOD
Bill (Dragon) had the same problem you did, the same side of the vehicle too. I would PM him and ask. I want to say he had to replace his Alternator, but don't quote me on that...
