Re: SCUBA Driver Transmission, Transfer Case, Rear Differential & E-Locker Breather MOD

This may have already been mentioned, but I'm too lazy to go back through 13 pages

It is possible to reach the AT and transfer case breathers from inside the passenger wheel well. Turn your wheels all the way to the drivers side, then remove the rubber sheet that is held inside the wheel well by trim fasteners.

With a little wiggling around, you should be able to sit up between the wheel and the frame and reach across to the breathers.

This does not make it easy - but it may be easier than going in from the top.

Re: SCUBA Driver Transmission, Transfer Case, Rear Differential & E-Locker Breather M

Did you completely remove the 1/4" line and install a new one? Any detail on the 1/4" line install would be greatly appreciated.

Mike,

First, thanks for this thread! Thanks to Jim 007FJ for identifying the transmission issue and where the vents are located!

Today I completed the full Scuba Driver Mod including the transmission and transfer case vent relocations! Mike, you forgot to mention how much blood is let sliding your left arm down past that *&%! bracket...

Enclosed is the photographic proof of my install. I'll PM you with my address for a sticker. If you still have them!

Please note that the vent line is not as tight as it shows in the photo... I took the photo and then installed the tie wraps.

Transmission and transfer case vents relocated

transmission and transfer case vents removed from top of bell housing

Differential and elocker vent lines moved (differential vent line is not that tight now!)

Now, to get warmer weather and a 4 1/4" drill bit to install my snorkel!

cheers,

dale

How did you remove the hose from below?

I got mine completed today and it was much easier for me to disconnect the transmission breather hose from its origin on the transmission instead of trying to remove the breather cap from the hose. Even after I got the hose off, I couldnt get the cap to budge. It took all of two minutes to remove the other end of the 6 inch hose from below....and I kept the skin on my arms this time.

Thanks again, Shadow!

Yeah - there are sure a lot of fellow FJ owners who are always willing to help out! I could not have made it this far with the mods without this help.

Those two existing vents on the driver's side of the engine compartment on the 5AT's are for the front differential and the front differential actuator. The 6MT's don't have the actuator vent since they are full time 4WD.

rear diff and e-locker in the rear

transmission and transfer case in the front. They are right next to each other on the transmission housing behind the engine.

Made even easier if you just pop the wheel off (on stands, for safety). Great tip!

Stringmachine!?!? you listening?
