Re: SCUBA Driver Transmission, Transfer Case, Rear Differential & E-Locker Breather M

I think I need to emphasize that doing the transmission breather is just as important as the rear diff breather.

I didn't do the transmission breathers when I did the rear because i couldn't get my hands down there and figured I would be fine.

Last weekend was a club event one of the rivers was quite high and we took several passes in my vehicle with different drivers. At the end of the first day there was a shudder in my transmission when sifting from 3rd to 4th and to OD. I was able to get the sponsoring dealership to bring in an on-call mechanic to flush the transmission twice. As we opened the tube and let some transmission fluid out it was thinner than normal. We flushed it with new fluid twice and the transmission is working like normal.

If you cross water i think it its important to do all breathers.

Jeebus! I would have soiled my pants if I were driving an FJ through that much water.

Re: SCUBA Driver Transmission, Transfer Case, Rear Differential & E-Locker Breather M

Anyone know where the tranny breather is on an 08 MT model?

I've read through EVERY page of this thread....saw one pic a few pages back that showed what the back of the engine looks like I've fished around in there only found the previously mentioned "cap", that's probably it but probably is not good enough obviously anyone actually do this relocation on an 08 MT yet....could you post up whet you did?

Dave

The MT's are Right on top of the Trans. Dead Center..
The only way to get to it is through the Top or Drop the Trans.. And I am guessing on the Top route.. I don't know if there is enough room to get your hand through the Stick hole...

Hope this helps.. There are Diagrams in the first pages of the Thread.

Good Luck

If the other end is connected to a tube coming out of the top of the trans, I'd say that's it. It looks like yours is already modified. Is that a late model '08?
This is the 2008 breather fix Toyota came up with.. It still needs to be changed and raised higher. This will only suck water in, IF you get that Deep..

Right on the back Left side of the block. Drivers side, is the Breather for the 2008 Trans.. Take that worthless thing Toyota came up with and get rid of it.. False sense of saftey if you ask me.. Move it up higher into the engine compartment and be safer.. 6K is a lot to rid on a factory breather...

IMO..

Re: SCUBA Driver Transmission, Transfer Case, Rear Differential & E-Locker Breather M

You know I must have had a stroke this afternoon when I posted that I have an automatic and have no idea why I typed "MT"

Duh.

Anyway I know the AT and MT are different where is the AT tranny breather?

Is it that cap like the pic a page or two back?

Sorry about that.

A question on the AT transmission breather is why does it allow you to suck air in and also blow air out? Is is a two way breather?
Yes, as the operating temperature changes the air inside will expand and contract and needs to be able to "breath".

Re: SCUBA Driver Transmission, Transfer Case, Rear Differential & E-Locker Breather M

Makes sense. I am now using all OEMs with the exception of the rear diff and Elocker that route to one scepter under the hood.

First let me apologize for being such a dumbazz but I just can't find the AT breather. I did find two metal breathers about six inches behind the battery and approximately half way to the top of the battery on the driver's side. Well that's even a dumbazz statement because of course in an FJ the battery is always on the driver's side. Is anybody good at leading the blind. I need all the help I can get. Oh, by the way I have a late model 08.
