Rick's comments overshadowed my question, so I'll ask it again. If the front diff valves are one way, don't they stand the chance of sucking water by the seals?
I'm not sure of what your asking, front diff valves?..If your mean the breather, then the answer is "Yes". The valve is not a valve per say. all it is a an inverted "cap" over the end of the hose. Like when you take a cup turn it upside down in some water. It traps an air space inside the cup. This would work fine if you didn't have "forces" at play. We have a constant heating up then cooling down in our gearing. This creates a suction effect, this would pull water inside the case. I hope this answer's your question

Re: SCUBA Driver Rear Differential Breather MOD

Thanks, that's what I was asking. One of the links in this tread is a knowledgeable guy explaining why vents are extended. His point was that the breathers work fine except for the temp changes. Hot diff into water: the valve closes but as it cools it sucks water by the axle seals because they are one way seals to keep oil in. If the front breathers are high enough and don't close because they are above water then I understand. But, one member said something about pressure or vacuum in his diff when he tried to open it. I just assumed they had some kind of oneway valve. Thanks again

They have been extended already and are less dangerous. Change the valves at the end at your pleasure.

Rick: Toyota's rear diff is the same design as every other rear diff on the market. They don't have a "magic" valve that is better than others. No-One is attacking you my friend. Just don't do it. If you spend years and years in the future enjoying the recreation of off roading, you will see that. Toyota has not done any special or new technology here. It is the same as all their other trucks and the same as jeep, land rover, Chevy, ford et. all. Time has proved that this mod saves off-roaders who get in deep water a lot of money in damages. The easiest way to learn a lesson is to just not do it. You might or might not ever have a problem. Why are you tilting windmills here? I've been doing this quite a while and I guarantee folks are just trying to be helpful.

MoabRat: This is a very good point and should help assuage the concerns folks like Rick may (legitimately) have about this mod. If there is a history of this mod helping owners of other vehicles, pariticularly Toyotas, with the same rear diff I would think that's pretty sound evidence in support of it.

I did this Mod to my '85 4Runner more than 10 years ago after getting water in my rear diff after some deep water crossing. The breather from my '85 looks the same as my 07 FJ. (just a little more rust)

Nobody is saying thast this mod is foolproof, but I never had water in my rear diff after I relocated the breather.

FYI, if you want to make this mod cheaper and easier you do not need to replace the breather, just relocate it higher. This way you are using factory componets with an extension.

Re: SCUBA Driver Rear Differential Breather MOD

Here it is!! reporting for duty sir

the breather tube is connected to the top of the rear diff on the bottom right, there is a fuel line attached to that it is wrapped up towards the elocker breather on the frame (make sure to have enough slack on it for articulation) @ that point we put a 1/8" 1/4"T attached to the elocker oem location (do not cut e locker just pull the head) and continued w/ the fuel line to the rear storage area (where the jack goes) and that is where it exits perdy cool.

here is the line finding it's exit into the storage

entering storage gasket very pro

here is the storage area this gasket is furthest towards the rear bumper

lets see some water find it's way in there
