4x4 / Off-Road TechThis section contains all discussion related to taking the FJ Cruiser in Off-Road situations, 4x4 applications and any armor modifications.
No offense was intended....just wanted you to have a realistic idea of what this was going to cost.
Yep, I've heard of Sillyneck from Pirate. It'll be top notch fab work for sure then.
I'm not sure how you broke down your $2K budget which is why I asked. If you figure in $1500 for MRW wheels and 37" tires, that eats into the budget fast, and you really haven't talked much about steering.....just my box was $450 with shipping.....gotta figure highsteer arms, TREs, pitman, hoses, possibly a pump, etc are gonna run a grand.....unless you use junkyard parts and don't rebuild them. Then you haven't even gotten to the front diff, master install kit, gears, locker, rebuilding the axles brakes, seals, wheel bearings, etc. I spent $1800 on SREs for both my f/r 4 links, with a few spares and the all the hardware (high misalignment spacers, jam nuts, threaded bungs)....you can skimp there, but if you break a link, expect to damage your coilover (if you're running them), the driveshaft, the steering, and the tcase....in my mind, it's not worth the risk of weaker parts in that area.
It does make me feel a lot better knowing who's doing your work though. I'm sure they know what will be best for you and since you work with them....you shouldn't have any problems. My comments were only made out of concern that you might be getting in over your head....not knowing you personally (or the details of the situation), I made a bad call on that. My apologies.
Regardless, good luck to ya. I'm sure it will turn out GREAT!
Take care,
Sean
Hey, it takes a lot to get my panties in a wad...don't you worry
I realize there are prolly other hidden costs and I plan on posting a complete list when it's all said and done. Most of the stuff being rebuilt is inhouse (by Tim Scully-Scully Offroad is lesser known but equally important ). I wouldn't be doing it at all if it wasn't for either of them.
Location: Well ain't this place a geographical oddity. Two weeks from everywhere!

yea, guess its time to retire my Stock Soapbox
OK, c'mon, please don't retire that soapbox yet! As a MissFJ fan, I can tell you there are still plenty of "stock" FJ owners who look up to you as an inspirational "we can do it, too" kind of heroine. Your example has reminded us that, even though it's stock, it is still built to live in the dirt.
I'm know that with these new mods, you will inspire more and more FJ owners to spread their wings and move above and beyond, but I want to thank you for being an inspiration to all of us, from the brand new stock-off-the-lot owner, to the avid offroader who was afraid to try the SFA, until your inspiration drove them on. You really are too cool for school!
