4x4 / Off-Road TechThis section contains all discussion related to taking the FJ Cruiser in Off-Road situations, 4x4 applications and any armor modifications.
So here are the finished pics.....We finished the front bumper late last night, and I was trying to hold off to post pics until I painted it...but now I realize it will take 2-3 days to PROPERLY paint it (yes, I DO have a fulltime job....so I'm stuck with 2-3 hours daylight when I get home)
I have NOT painted the bumper yet, but thought I would post up the final product for you all to see....
This bumper has a Warn M8000 recessed inside, with a hole to access the winch lever....
We will probably remove it tonight, and weigh it, with and without the winch. Keep in mind though, this winch has plasma rope and not steel cable, so thats at least 30# right there. I will post up weights when we get them....
Once again, MAJOR props go out to AJ, Chuck (snowchucker) and Emily...
Here is a pic from far away; you can see the Bentup.com sliders also...taken before I insalled the fairlead and hook. Future bumpers will also have the shackle points relocated to the face of the bumper for clearance issues............

Reminds me of "Mad Max/ Road Warrior", Nice if you want that look. Good job bent-up, way to be the on the leading edge if FJ add-ons.
Gonna do powder coat?
I do have a suggestion
that bumper has no way for you to inspect the spooling of the winch
and seeing how it is extemely inportant for the failure rate of the cable, that it is spooled properly, you need to open the top so you can inspect the spooling, maybe a flip up trap door.
proper use of a winch is a matter of someone getting a very bad injury or death
tey are not toys, and the spooling of a winch is one of the most important and fundimental items of it's use

besides that, nice design
I had the same concern but I'll yield to those with more experience. Is the fair lead slot going to be big enough to inspect/correct? If you are running a cable instead of a rope is a roller fair lead better? Does normal winch maintenance require removal of the bumper?
Sorry for all the dumb questions, but take it as a compliment. I really like the bumper, just want to make sure I'm not creating a hazard/more work for myself.
Thanks for posting this as quickly as you did Andy!!!

BTW, nice rottie!
it is a nice design
and he is using synthertic line which spooling is not as important
however, most are going to use metal cable, and overlapping the line can cause imediate failure under the right conditions, and it damages the cable for the next use, making failure more a more apt ordeal. watching thru the fairlead hole leaves you open to being killed by snapback due to a failure. or lossing a limb. I would prefer a way that you could watch standing back 5 or more feet.

Great suggestion!
I will mention this as soon as AJ gets here tonight. In your opinion, would a 'view port' be better on TOP or IN FRONT?? I am thinking since there is so much room in front, a 'window' would work better in front...but thought I would ask.
I have ONE more pic, from last night, before I got home and put the fairlead and hook on..
And of course, you can also see the Bentup.com FJ sliders on....give me a week and they will all be painted a nice 'trim black'.

here is a soon to be commercially available version with inspection slot All Pro Bumper
now I am not pushing the bumper, I plan on welding up one myself, I can see where it will save 6 or 7 hundred dead presidents to get out the plasma cutter and welder, just showing what a inspection hole allows you to see

I would prefer the top
I do not like in dash winch control, I prefer using the cable so I can watch the spool, so a top flip up, which could have neet looking screwdowns, would allow to snap on and off the control cable
plus it would allow you to get at the winch if needed, unpowered and unloaded ofcourse.
