4x4 / Off-Road TechThis section contains all discussion related to taking the FJ Cruiser in Off-Road situations, 4x4 applications and any armor modifications.
Although I was impressed with the brake performance of the FJ out of the box, I am a performance addict. As a long time Landcruiser fanatic, I can't leave well enough alone. If you are like me, then I would like to tell you about a brake upgrade I've been evaluating:
EBC performance slotted / dimpled rotors with EBC Green stuff performance pads. EBC is an English company known world-wide for their performance brake products (ask any motorcycle enthusiast), and I've fit checked and am now using their direct replacement performance rotors and pads on my FJ Cruiser. The good factory stopping performance has been dramatically improved further. Installation of all four rotors and pads should take any capable DIY'r or mechanic an hour or so, with no mods to the FJ. They stop quicker, stay cooler, and the dimples have the same benefits as drilled holes w/o the downside of fissuring from excess heat or hard off road usage. I will mention I am biased towards performance upgrades, as I sell EBC (and Brembo, Baer, and SSBC brakes) at my store, but the info is honest.

It's a natural progression for me to consider the available brake upgrades on my rigs...Baer Eradispeed rotors on my '04 Cobra got rid of a brake burning smell even notable on mildly spirited stops. I believe this is due to the drilled slotted rotors being able to vent the gasses better, even though it had stock-performance 13 plus inch front rotors.
I have considered the brand you are using on other vehicles---good to know it's working out.
The rotors run about $198 per pair (front pair and rear pair). The pads run about $89 / set front and $79 / set rear. If you are capable of doing even minor work to your vehicle this is an easy install. No mods, no bleeding the brakes, no special tools.
not bad cost...
the 2 piece Baer rotors on my cobra were 475 a pair---but two piece is more costly indy car style stuff

Re: Brake Upgrade For Your Fj
I had green stuff on my wrx but didnt like them because they kicked alot of dust out and wore out with a quickness.I might wait to see who else copmes out with brakes
Offroaders often avoid cross drilled / slotted rotors due to the fact that you can get debris / rocks / etc caught in the slots or holes and when it happens it eats the brake pads really quick.
If you don't spend a lot of time in the dirt / rocks, these would be great. Mostly visual on the rotor piece, but you don't see much rotor with the stock wheels. The pads can help, but can also squeak as the compound gets harder. I just don't see brake fade being a big issue on these trucks.
As a side note, I use EBC and porterfield on my BMW M Series racecars, so I am familiar with the products and their usage.
