FJ Camping 'Canopy' or extension for the rear?...

Hi all,

I was at a loss where to put this, but I was looking around on Springbar® Camping Tents, and I saw this neat canopy:

Springbar® 811 Leisure Port Canopy

I was thinking, it might make a nice cover for camping out of the FJ, or for day trips with a little extra shade. How? Set it up normally, but take one of those 4 triangles and attach it to the roof rack on the FJ.

Since I can't paint a picture.....you would have the back door open, canopy over the back door/truck, and you would stake three sides in the ground, but the fourth would be tied to the forward most of the FJ's rack (or maybe even all the way tied to the front bumper). This would give you three sides and shade all the way across the top of the FJ....cover the FJ in some shade also.

Does this make sense? Anyways, what do you all think?

Re: FJ Camping 'Canopy' or extension for the rear?...

Great find Mrcat88!

We currently have one of these... Sportz Large SUV Tent ... but it is a pain in the @ss to set up, and tear down (heavy when wet and muddy)....we sleep in the back of the FJ.

Here's my idea....a canopy like you found that fits in a bag attached to the back of the rack. You zip it open, expand, maybe place two poles and a couple of guy wires at the end, and you are done. (The same concept as a rooftop tent, but for the rear of the FJ). Pull it out, tie it down, done.

I'd like it to be big enough for a couple of chairs to fit in and be screened around the sides for insects.

Thanks for the links, it gives me more ideas!

I just tie a 8x6 $4, pvc canopy to the roof rack and drive some 6' 1/2" rebar ($2 bucks a piece) with a mallet into the ground and tie it all together. Works great and with the rope costs < $15.

Funny, Kirkham's is right down the street from me. They've got some nice stuff in there. Top quality, high end store. I used to know the manager, but now he's a sales rep for Keen shoes.
