Question on the 3-locker carrier if anyone can help

I hoping someone can help me out here. I have an auto tranny with the rear E-lock. I believe that means my stock gears are 3:73's. I'd like to go with some 4:56's so I know I'll need to go to a larger carrier. Does this mean I lose my E-lock? Obviously I'd like to retain the factory locker in the rear if possible. I haven't seen any places that sell just an aftermarket carrier, so a point in the right direction there would be appreciated as well. Thanks a bunch!

Sorry for the sp error in title. Tried to edit but cannot.

No. Only the front carrier need to be changed out if you go with 3.9 & higher gears. The rear carrier does not need to be changed so you can keep the e-locker.

You might even find someone with a MT that got a front ARB locker and reuse their front carrier. Or just buy the ARB front locker and be done with it (see ARB site for the right part number). Last I checked it was the RD111 fro 3.9 & up gears and the RD121 for les than 3.9 gears.

Re: Question on the 3-locker carrier if anyone can help

Thanks all. I am a little confused why I would not have to change the rear carrier if going up to 4:56. I could swear I had to do that on my D44 a few years back. I'll give AP a call.

Thanks!

Re: Question on the 3-locker carrier if anyone can help

You are brilliant. No carrier change in the rear (shew). Front, yes. BTW - Toyota wants $1100 for the front carrier alone. Umm, let me see here...ARB $800...correct carrier already...divided by 3.47294 {26*9} multiplied by Pi, carry the 4 ... Equals:

DUH!!!!!!! Locker for me

PS - Thanks Terry!

Re: Question on the 3-locker carrier if anyone can help

So are you going to go with the ARB locker up front with 4.56 gears? The reason I ask is that I am looking at a gear change to 4.56 as well. I wasn't aware that I had to change the front carrier. I did the math and the gear change from stock 3.72 with 33" tires to 4.56 with 33" tires is about 19% increase in rpm's at 75 mph. 2849 rpms at 75mph to 3493 rpms at 75 mph. I read from an old post by KLD that the diff between the AT and MT is 17% at 70 mph. I had to search for final drive ratios to find all this. I googled gear ratios to find the formulas to use.

Re: Question on the 3-locker carrier if anyone can help

Good homework, Shawn. I came up with similar numbers and yes, the M/T's and A/T's have a profound affect. That's why I use 4wheelparts site for the exact OD on each tire. Very helpful in determining exact speed/RPM calculations. I'm going from 33's to 35's. My 3rd set of tires for this rig.

Keep in mind your top gear on either the AT or MT is an overdrive gear so take that into your calculations. The RPMs you quote for the speeds looks like you are using a direct gear for the top gear in the transmission and not the overdrive ratios of either transmission.
