TRD or Borla?

Hi. I would appreciate input on the Borla vs the catback (TRD). Is the TRD strictly an audio enhancement or will it give a nominal increase? I just heard about the Borla- don't know the cost but based upon what I paid on a vette it will be painful.

Re: TRD or Borla?

Have you considered going to an exhaust shop and seeing about having them craft something, even duals? Magnaflow is a great muffler...
I'd recommend one of your muffler specialist shops people like in your area over a chain store.

Re: TRD or Borla?

Thanks. This makes sense except for one thing. Early on I was badly affected by attempting to mod a Japanese motor. In 74 I bought a Yamaha 650 new. I got the great idea to put a Hooker header on it. Sounded great but dropped power. So, on advisement, I rejetted the carbs and put an HP intake on it too. Several other corrective actions, and long story short, because memory fails, the bike never ever, started again and I sold it in a box. I swore I would never attempt to change anything on a Japanese vehicle.
Chevrolet yes, Japan no. I have lived by this rule for a quarter century plus and simply can't change. Thought I would order the TRD and bolt in on and not worry about upsetting the zen.

Re: TRD or Borla?

I doubt history will recreate itself concerning your exhaust system...

Re: TRD or Borla?

Does anyone have data on the performance gains if any between the OEM and TRD exhaust?

Re: TRD or Borla?

I didn't know that. The dealer identified them as two different options. As above, is there an appreciable power gain?

Re: TRD or Borla?

Of the two i drove w and w/o TRD I didn't think it gave 400.00 worth of improvement. And that would be a kit for you to put on yourself or pay to install. I'd think for that amount some exhaust shop could give you coolie-dualies.
The TRD is a bit throatier/raspier than stock---
I bet for 200.00 an exhaust shop could cut off your stock muff and put on a magnaflow and give you the throaty feature. You could pick from tons of tip styles too, and be unique at least in that regard.

Re: TRD or Borla?

Plus if you plan on re-routing your exhaust so it will not be ripped off, best to just go to a local shop.

Re: TRD or Borla?

Go with Magnaflow. My 4runner sounds nice, my Cressida sounds really nice.

Seems like Magnaflow is 6cylinder friendly vs the others lol.

Heres the Cressida exhaust with 1 factory cat, 1 Magnaflow cat, 2.25 inch pipe from the cat to the back, then a Magnaflow muffler 2.25 inlet, 2.25 outlet with chrome 3" x 10" chrome tip. BTW, the deeper, wider the tip, the more deeper sound. Learned that the expensive way.
