I am not sure about the dust prevention thing. My filter gets just as dirty. In the service we used these to cross water. I bought it not as to hydro loc the engine due to the amount of water crossing that I make on my trips. All of my electrical connectors have Dielectric grease in them. As far as the here are several connections for the the air intake. There are 6 clamps , 1 vacuum line & the MAF. I am not saying that it is 100% water tight for extended periods of time. However for water crossings i am at least 99% water tight. I have had zero water intrusion into my air intake system. I guess we were doing it wrong the the military all of those years lol
His first pic does show it better, at least you get LESS dust.
I thought the FJ would get damaged in many other electrical areas with water that high?
I may have to water tight mine  and use the grease, if you can tell me where all you sealed up
Really like the Bushwhacker pockets with snorkel! Did you use snorkel unmounted on unmounted flares as a pattern, or? Kinda like that "spin" snorkel, any real advantages of one over the other? How deep (inches) can you ford without damage to electricals or engine? Recently had SPod installed and dielectric grease used in connector for ARB driving lights, winch and bumper lights as an "anti-corrosive" agent, so has anybody done a
"how to" with details of doing most possible to "water-proof", to extent possible, the engine and electronics?
Dust prevention was the intended reason for snorkels, just check out the pic from ARB. Snorkels
This was the yellow FJC that ARB USA sent over to Australia for Safari to design the snorkel for.
When we go on runs up at Greenwater in the past in the summer with several rigs, you can barely see in front of you there is so much dust, and my filter does stay cleaner with the snorkel on than without.
However a week after ARB installed my snorkel on my rig I came across a large body of water under a bridge in my town where the street had flooded from heavy rains.
There was an Auburn police officer on the other side getting ready to shut down the road when I came upon it at 30 MPH or so and I could not see it until I was upon it.
It slowed my rig down instantly, and I had a wave of water clear up over my windshield.
Had I not had the snorkel on the stock air intake in the wheel well would have taken on water and I would have hydrolocked the engine.
But as far as playing in the water, I do not, too many things can go wrong.
I bought the snorkel for dust prevention when tooling around in the hills exploring for new back country campsites, and when wheeling with a group.
Pics below though were at Mt. Rainier National Park White River campground, another place I like to camp since the 80s.
You'll have to replace your antenna with a 2" stubby because the stock one looks silly next to the snorkel. They are like $10 at Autozone. I love this snorkel. Enhanced the sound from my Flowmaster 40 exhaust. A lot of people ask me what it is. LOL. Good luck installing it, too. My fender got torn up. The template they give you will most likely be off a little.
I get the thing about the swirl and the heavy particles. Same principle as the intakes on aircraft I've worked on. While other intakes on the turbine airplanes and helicopters use reverse flow to do this. In winter snow baffles would be installed. This blocks the direct airflow into the intake and forces air to come in from behind. This did affect performance, but not much. During our checks it would typically raise the exhaust temp by 10 degrees C. Normal temps would be around 750C, so not as detrimental as one would think. And on the one model of engine the air reversed inside the engine 3 times.
For a really low budget solution, you could do what I did to my '91 4Runner I had before I traded it in on my FJ back in July of 2006.
It worked great, and the chicks really dug it.
