Durability of factory brush guard...in real life

Has anyone banged their factory brush guard into anything? What happened? Did it protect the lights and grill or just get smashed into the lights and grill?

Re: Durability of factory brush guard...in real life

well i really think it is more for looks then anything else....it mounts on top of the bumper so if you were to hit anything the bumper would take the brunt of it.... it seems to help deflect branches and whatnot though

cant speak for the Toyota brush guard.....but a friend of mine had a factory brush guard on his jeep Cherokee...was going home late out on the highway...he hit a deer..it folded back into the hood/grill...the kc day lighters he had mounted were shoved into the radiator...not much protection....i used to have a defender 90 with a arb bumper and winch...i also hit a deer early one morning...it held beautifully...all it did was burn thru the powder-coat and took out turn signal lens....RR

Here's one on an 80

The brush guard bent back causing additional damage to the fenders.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It seems like there would be less damage just whacking the factory bumper and picking up a used one here on the parts for sale threads.

Plus, those wrap-around style brush guards are like grappling hooks when backing up. Many a tree have gotten hung up on those that ultimately caused damage to the entire front bumper, grill and clip. And, a few spotters have been snagged by those as well.

Re: Durability of factory brush guard...in real life

My dad had one on his 80 for at least 10 years without any damage. But one day as I backed out of the drive way, I didn't look back and my rear bumper smashed the front passenger corner of the bumper. Luckily I didn't hit the gaurd otherwise it would've been major damage.

I ended up taking off the brush gaurd to pop out the dent. He wanted to leave it off, so I ended up selling it.
