octane

Is anyone filling up with less than 91 octane fuel? The Toyota manuel states clearly 91 or higher, yet other reports on-line say this is optional.

Re: octane

It'll just cost a couple hundred bucks a year....go ahead and run it. Going from 87 to 93 is only $.20 more a gallon. At around 20 gallons a fill, you're talking $4.00 extra. Half that if you're going from 89 to 93 (or 91 depending on the station although I've always searched for 93 octane gas stations). That adds up to, if you run two tanks a week, $8.00 a week, or just a bit more than a dollar a day. Again, half that if you're planning on running mid grade. It just doesn't cost that much more. Even if you run 3 tanks a week it's only a $1.50 a day. Much less than a cup of coffee at Starbucks or the like and you'll probably get a least one more mile to the gallon with the premium not to mention better performance.

Here's another thread on the subject:

Why the High Octane Gas?
