Protecting Catalytic Converter From Theft

As a newer FJ owner (since May of this year) I have a real concern about all of the catalytic converter thefts. After searching various threads here and elsewhere I decided to make my first post because I can't find any information on this. I'm wondering how (or if) any of you are protecting yours? My best guess would be a plate to cover it... what kind of skid plate would you recommend for this (i.e. brand, location under truck)? I have no problem spending a few hondos on something that would spare me what others have already been going through.

...and it seems very reasonable to have my first mod be something very practical.

Thanks,

I haven't heard of this problem. Seems like covering the cat. would cause it to retain more heat and therefor heat up the surrounding areas.

Re: Protecting Catalytic Converter From Theft

I never heard of catalytic converters being stolen. What is the value in them that someone would get under a vehicle and remove one? My experience is that anything with the exhaust system is generally a PIA to get off when you have plenty of time and tools. I dont get it.

If someone takes my catalytic converter, more power for me!

Re: Protecting Catalytic Converter From Theft

Our local exhaust shop replaces the catalytic converters on an average of two to three cars per week. Theft IS a concern because people are stealing them for the platinum and rhodium that they contain. Dont ask me how they actually GET the metals out once they are stolen. A good thief can steal one in under a couple of minutes.

Interesting, not something I would have thought about protecting from theft.

Re: Protecting Catalytic Converter From Theft

Seems like this would be a problem on any car. You have to live in some really rough places. There is very little platinum in them.

Thanks,
Perhaps you can consider lowering your FJ? Instead lifting it up? :-(
