Re: ARB Safari Snorkel Install Instructions w/ Pics

OK, today I ordered my Snorkel from Tacozilla, and while I was at it I purchased a CAI and a TRD exhaust $$$$$$$$$$$$

I'm hoping to get the best of both worlds and it may not be possible. Here is what I would like to know. According to the description below, part of the advantage of the TRD CAI is the size of the oval air intake that reduces in size so that the MAF doesn't wig out.

FJ Cruiser, Cold Air Intake TRD, 4.0 L V6, Retail price $399.00
Cold Air Intake, TRD, 4.0L V6 PN: PTR05-35061 - A unique 3-angle 5.5" to 4" filter flow adapter mounted in a black rotational-molded housing with a brushed-finish aluminum cover - 4 inch diameter rotational-molded intake tube transitioning to a 3" diameter at the throttle body to maximize air flow into the engine while maintaining correct air/fuel ratio calibration. - A reusable high-flow, low restriction air filter. - All testing done to stringent Toyota standards. Peak to Peak Power Gain HP +11HP @ 4,850rpm; Torque +19.0 ft-lbs @ 3,600rpm - - - Largest Power Gain HP +15HP @ 3,150 rpm; Torque +25 ft-lbs @ 3,150 rpm Individual performance improvements may vary.

That being the case, is it silly for me to be buying a CAI for added horsepower/colder air etc, since the intake for the snorkel is about 3-3/8" ID?

Any insight is appreciated.

Ok Bill, IMHO the CAI is still going to help with the HP improvements, here's why. The Snorkel is just that, it terminates just inside the engine bay. The stock breather system is where the restriction is. Thus, by having the CAI, you will increase your flow Dia to the Intake alone. I watched a 20-25 degree temp drop by using the CAI alone. Now keep in mind that we are still using the stock intake air location in the fender wall (which I will call it Passive Intake) and still get this type of performance. By adding a Snorkel even though it’s a smaller dia tube, it is in essence ambient air is being “aggressively forced” into the intake of the engine, which will give even better gains. If you just use the stock breather and a snorkel, you will still have the benefits of lower temps, but still have a couple of filter obstacles to deal with on a stock breather system. The CAI is a very large Filter and this is the only filter source between intake and engine, which in essence helps maintain a better flow through the entire intake system. That’s my thought; I hope this helps.

Thanks much, Mike. I appreciate the input. BTW, I ordered the reducer fitting from the same location you purchased yours online. Thanks for the link

Re: ARB Safari Snorkel Install Instructions w/ Pics

Looks like I am waiting for the next shipment and will have time to read about all the other installs. Having installed the pre cleaner last weekend the intake tube on the fender side does not look as long as the original and has a bulge. Not sure if this will work with the snorkel intake tube. Has anyone installed their snorkel with the pre cleaner yet?

Great Bill, just a little side note. You may want to call your Toy dealer and order or buy some of the little black clips, that the inside the fenderwall attach to. This way they will be on hand when you break them off when removing the inner fender cover. I bought a package of 10 yesterday. Corey said they are 12 of them, but I figure I can salvage a couple of them when removing it.

No one has a snorkel yet, didn't you read the posts?...

Re: ARB Safari Snorkel Install Instructions w/ Pics

There are 10 of those clips under there Mike.
And some will break.

If you can get one of those clip tools, that will speed up the process and also prevent some from getting broke.
