4x4 / Off-Road TechThis section contains all discussion related to taking the FJ Cruiser in Off-Road situations, 4x4 applications and any armor modifications.
I did a search and didn't find this discussed directly. On ebay they have a powerchip that said it would add 20 Horsepower and more. Anybody see this yet? Twenty horsepower is alot of extra, expecially if you put on the 3 inch lift and 285 tires and larger. So what do you think?
Please do not put anything on your car that monkeys with the ECU for $20. Wait for a real programmer like HyperTech and the like to come out with something!
But if you do get it, get a Tornado while you're at it! Spin that air into a vortex and enjoy 50+hp!

I hope your joking cause, The tornado thing is a joke, come on if you really can get 50+ HP, better gas milage. You do you think this has eluded every car manufacturer!!! Just think of the more cars u can sell by adding a 1 dollar hunk of tin!

The OBD2 computer (ecm) used on modern vehicles does not have a prom "chip" like early ecm's of the '80's and early 90's. Any computer tuning that "could" be done either has to be done by "reflashing" the ecm's mapping via the OBD data connector (usually under steering column area) OR in some cases replacing the whole ecm with a tuneable one such as on Subaru WRX's.
The term "chip" is meaningless and so '80's--- quit using it, please!!.
Use new terms like "reflash"
Real tuners such as SuperChips, Diablo and others spend countless hours tuning on dynos and real life conditions to come up with optimum mapping "trade offs"- I call them---no single tuning is right for every driver on the planet Earth.
What the ebay bozo's are selling you is another intake air temp sensor to replace your stock one. It contains a "richer" resistance spec that the ecm uses to "fatten" the fuel air ratio.
This is a rather "across the board" fattening, not taking into consideration any other sensor inputs, or changing timing to compensate .
Expect less mileage and possible check engine light problems due to the o2 sensor trying to compensate by trying to keep the stoichometric (fuel/air) ratio at 14.5:1---the computer will see that as a rich condition and give you the dreaded light.
So I would avoid it. You will hate it and think---"oh well I just lost a 30.00 and its not worth the return hassles"

I meant to say powerchip in the title - heh. My first impression is that the ebay thing was a bunch of crap. I've seen many vehicles get new powerchips - mostly Ford diesels and they were usually around $350. I'm pretty skeptical of anything that promises that much improvement for so little money. If it were that cheap and easy, Toyota would have done it themselves. I wouldn't buy this thing but I still thought it was an interesting read.
I think a cold air intake and checking into custom duals w/ an x pipe collector would be some great bang for the buck. Thats in my mind---havent dyno'ed my thoughts however...
I bet some reputable companies will come up with computer tweaks over time and Atlas will build a 400:1 t/case LOL

Krash
Unless you drive a diesel, forget any of the hypertech, superchips, XYZ crap. The tuners rarely give you the best bang for the buck. Diesels on the other hand... I wouldn't drive mine without a tuner.

Yeah, what Tractorlegend said...lol...excellent explanation of the modern misunderstandings of ECUs and air intake systems.
This topic was posted before...the only thing that stuck in my head about the thread is that you can't expect a major performance upgrade for the price of a meal at Taco Bell...TractorLegend definately confirmed my suspisions.
