Nice job Shadow-Warrior. You had every thing in there. What is your opinion on useing a roller fairleed for synthetic line instead of a hawse style fairleed. The hawse seems like a marketing gimick to me as a roller would provide less friction. Not sure if I'm missing something here. One pearl of wisdom I can recomend when wheeling with full sized trucks. Is to also have a length of chain, a recovery reciver with D shackle to hook to a tree saver for the back end when pulling out 1 ton dodge crewcab diesel trucks. When I hooked up my 12,000 lb winch I just sled untill I backed up to a Douglas fir tree, threw a strap around it and used a chain conected to my reciever hitch recovery shackle.
I know what your talking about, but that really dosn't beong on this thread, this is about how to "Choose" a winch, not recovery techniques

Nice write up Mike. I don't agree with all of it....but overall, very helpful with good info.
Sean
I would like to hear your take too, I just reposted from a web site the info. I was lazy yesterday and didn't want to spend the time writing it up. I would like to have your take on the info Sean
Maybe make it a "Living Post" ?

Good thread Shadow, Sticky It! Also, we should have a section on winch accessories or a paragraph. I know my list below is really a recovery post, but most people buy the winch and gear at the same time. My two cents would be to get a heavy movers pad to throw over winch wire under tension, 50 to 75 ft. extra wire, at least two large D*Rings, two pulley shackles, two sets of gloves for when your copilot assists, two tree straps and a heavy chain. IMO everything should be rated to 10000 lbs, regardless of winch size. Also I suggest a backpack over a tote bag for the winch controller, shackles, drings and gloves. keep it up in the cab with you so you can grab it and go if you need to winch. Ideally one should not winch at night, but I would suggest a head lamp and!or a free standing light source. Keep both in the winch bag. Practice with ALL gear at least twice before hitting the trail. And bring patience with you, winching done properly takes time.

FJ KIA. RIP Goliath. Tread lightly but carry a big hi-lift.
Take it slow and stay on the trail. And always remember the FJ is HEAVY. JMHO as a reformed trail-blazer.
