4x4 / Off-Road TechThis section contains all discussion related to taking the FJ Cruiser in Off-Road situations, 4x4 applications and any armor modifications.
Has any body who've lifted your FJ noticed if the hedlights are pointed too high? Just wondering if they'll need to be re-aimed and if it's something we'll be able to do ourselves.
Newer vehicles w/ aerodynamic headlights require specialized aiming equipment. Gone are the days where the suction cup type Hoppy leveling aimers can be used.
Theres a projector looking deal on wheels that is positioned in front of the headlights w/ a viewing screen and graduations to adjust by. Likely a good body shop in your area would have one. Call around and ask if they have aiming equipment for newer rigs. I would think they must since they repair heavy hits and all.
You could experiment if you wish against your garage door or a big wall at night.
They cost about $2500.00 for the equipment.

All you need it a long philips screwdriver. There is a hole near the headlamp assembly. Just turn the screw and your light will be re-aimed to your liking.

Do you have an FJ to know this is the case?
Many newer ones adjust from under the hood and some even have their own levels/bubble guides built in. Couldn't tell w/o looking.

I had to adjust lights on my FJ because I just installed an H4 Dual Beam 6000K HID kit. Due to the brightness of the bulb and my lift I had to lower it. Just pop the hood and line the car up against a wall. All you'll need is a long thin philips. I thought it would be more complicated but it is that easy.
I installed the Revtech kit and my headlights could be adjusted a little lower. Where exactly is the adjustment screw? I could't find it. Is it behind the headlight? Thanks for any help.
Don't forget that when you re adjust your headlights downward, you lose distance AND area that will be illuminated. To compensate for this you might consider adding a good set of fog (cornering lights) to restore some width and light to the road in front of you... (as well as PIAA extreme white bulbs to make the most of what you've got left...)

I would also do a side-by-side comparison as to what coverage you feel is there when switching between bulbs. I thought the stock bulbs did an OK job of covering the road (albeit far to high as mentioned); yet switching to the PIAAs made me want to slap the originals back in to see what we might be missing previously.
Great quality light....yet (IMO) poor coverage on the road with plenty of unneeded illumination in the overhead foiliage and even a shaded spot where there need not(?) be one when using the highbeams.

anytime you do a lift, or level, or something related to that you need to have the lights adjusted

However if you are adjusting to get "back" to normal after a front end lift you are not going to lose anything. However if you leave the lights shinning in the back of other peoples cars at night you might lose a few teeth.
My questions is how do you set them? Park X distance from a wall and aim at point Y? I'll go off and google it.
