4H and 4L questions

Today I decided to see how the FJ drives in 4H. Drove fine and I kept it around 55mph since I'm not sure how fast 4H can go (just need to look that up no big deal) HOWEVER...while in 4H when I pulled into a parking space I had the wheel turned to the right full turn and it felt like the brakes were on! I turned all the way left and the same thing! Aside from that the FJ was fine, has anyone else come across this? Also, I noticed that the engagement was rather difficult but it did finally let me go back into 2H. I'm assuming the engagement is a break in type of problem but I do not understand why it felt like the brakes were on in full turn in 4H.

Can anyone explain this? If not, I'm taking to the dealership this week

Re: 4H and 4L questions

It is binding. Don't turn sharp on the pavement with it in 4h.

Thanks Larry, now is that normal or does that mean there's an issue? I'm not an expert on diffs so pardon the questions.

Correct-O-Mundo. If you want/need to do drive on pavement with the diff locked, then the MT6 with Full Time 4WD was your better solution. Which means you'd need a 2nd FJ - how kewl is that?!?!?!?!

Re: 4H and 4L questions

Well, it was wet pavement in about 2 inches of water so no dry pavement. I just hope if I'm off-road that I will not need to turn the wheel the whole way but I will follow everyone's advice. I did take it out and this time the engagement was much easier so I'll avoid any very sharp turns in 4H or 4L...actually I'll avoid 4H or 4L on pavement period after reading some of the articles. I guess I have to find some dirt roads once a month to get it into 4H to keep the diff fluids flowing according to the manual.

Thanks for the input...now off to 4x4abc!

Re: 4H and 4L questions

its the cv joints past their turning radius thus kinda bending if you will.

also, when switching it into 4L did you have it in neutral?
