FJ straight Axel Conversion!

Has anyone thought about doing this? I know I have. This is completely new terrain for me though. How much would something like this costs? How long would it take? What are the advantages and disadvantages? I really need some input on this. Much love!

Sam

Don't know about cost or time involved but I think I'd test out the new technology on the FJ before a major modification like that. Toyota know the ins and outs of solid front axel vs. what they've come up with for the Fj, and they came out with what they came out with. I'm gonna trust if and test it out for a while. My Black Cherry, manuel transmission is less that 2-4 weeks away. (I just got a VIN from my dealeer.) I'm very excited.

Re: FJ straight Axel Conversion!

check out this thread at TTORA Forums. Aparently All Pro Off-Road is building a SFA FJ Cruiser for Petersens 4 wheel and off-road magazine, to be destroyed on the '06 ultimate adventure.

The all-pro guy over at the TTORA board had this to say:

The Ultimate Adventure FJ Cruiser will be here tomorrow getting cut-up! It will have 39" Krawlers, 4 speed Atlas, and Dynatrac Pro-Rock 60s front & rear. We will be developing a solid axle swap kit and possibly a rear coil-over kit.
There are pics of the progress in the thread linked above.

Re: FJ straight Axel Conversion!

I'd love to have a solid front axle, and when the FJ goes out of warranty I'll give it some thought. The downside will be the expense of the swap, plus replacing the lift kit (I've currently got a Donahoe lift). I've got solid axle's on my FJ 80 and the kit for it was considerably less than what's required for the FJ. Since I haven't had the FJ off-road yet I can't speak to how the suspension compares to the FJ 80's, but I'll give it a thorough workout this summer in Colorado.

I've seen this rig in person, it's going to be sweet. It has a trick cage inside from Poison Spyder that I hope they produce. I called them to find out about availability but they didn't bother to return my call.

Thought I would post up the pic from the thread mentioned above....looks like the front and rear suspention is torched off already, and probably grinded down all purdy-like.

Wonder if the ATRAC wheel sensors will function when this is done??? That part of the axle swap has me wondering....I would assume it would not, but then again, with a solid axle you wouldn't NEED ATRAC....

Yeah, I'm thinking ATRAC goes bye-bye. They are going to have front and rear lockers, so really they don't need ATRAC anyway. I don't know how the computer is going to take that though. I suppose it's the same for all the 05+ Taco swaps though.

I would imagine it will handle it just fine, so long as they dont turn it on.... on the same topic, how do you suppose the computer will handle not having the wheel speed sensors at all? specifically all the STAR safety system crapola, like VSC, ABS, regular (-A) TRAC?

I think it will handle it by illuminating all sorts of pretty warning lights
