Question when in 4 wheel high

Hi guys,

Here's a stupid question. I was in 4 high yesterday on dry pavement just to exercise the components. When I started from a stop and moved forward slowly (into my garage, into a parking space, etc), it took a lot more force on the gas pedal to get moving. I don't remember my '03 4runner doing this, is it normal?

Ya, I definitely need to get the FJ out in 4 wheel drive more.

Thanks for any comments.

Re: Question when in 4 wheel high

Sounds like you might have had some driveline binding. That often occurs when on 4x4 mode on dry pavement. Even without lockers and such, your diffs and tranfer case can tighten up pretty quick without having some amount of slippage where the rubber meets the road. Driving absolutely straight still binds the works because rarely are your rolling radii exactly the same on all tires. Whenever you feel the need to "exercise" your front end components, it would be a good idea to find a dirt lot or gravel road to drive on. It would be a lot less stressful on your running gear.

Re: Question when in 4 wheel high

Thanks Mike. All the info is very much appreciated. I'm still learning a lot about this truck and enjoying every minute of it. I took it to work this morning and everything seemed normal. I was probably turning more than I thought before. I'll take it to the hills next time.

Thanks again.

Re: Question when in 4 wheel high

My first vehicle did this, a 20 year old CJ-7. I had just thought that it was because it was old that it did had the exact same issue. No turning in 4hi or lo on pavement. Not good for drive train.
