do you guys use the steel that you cut out to re-weld ..if not what gauge do you use??

I just used a couple chunks of 1/8" mild steel I found literally laying around on the floor in the corner of my dad's garage. I don't know what gauge that is off hand but I remember it was very close to 1/8" when I took my calipers to it.

For the record, I never removed my mounts (the rubber part). I soaked some rags, and I mean soaking, and just put them around the mount as a heatsink. I switched them up every time I stopped drawing a bead, to let one of the two dedicated rags cool off in the bucket.

I will admit even with this one of my mounts started to flame a little at one point. Did no damage whatsoever because I put it out easy. Just put my gloved finger on it to put it out. There is always a fire extinguisher within reach when I am welding, but so far I've never needed it! Thank goodness!
